Hello,
Perhaps someone can help out. We have been told that "Urdu Software has limitations.
It is not possible to simply overtype on Word documents. We have to create
everything one by one." The Word file was English in the original. What is your experience with overwriting Word files with Urdu translations?

Urdu typing in MS Word - which version of MS Windows OS? May 17, 2004

Greetings.

If your PC has an operating system (OS) of either MS Windows 2000 or XP (XP is considerably the better OS of the two), you should be able to type Urdu text inside MS Word, after you:

(1) install and enable Farsi language support needed to get right-to-left (RTL) drivers

(2) find and download some Urdu TTF fonts

(3) go to the Microsoft website and enter "Urdu keyboard" (without quotes) inside the search box so you can find, select and print the appropriate (101- or 104-key layout) keyboard diagram.

That diagram (you might copy the printed diagram at 125% - 150% larger to simplify your reading the character on each key) would be very helpful in finding and learning the correct keystroke combinations.

UNICODE supports Urdu. Microsoft adopted UNICODE (finally) in MS Windows 2000 and XP, and the basic CD for either version includes support of RTL languages such as Arabic, Persian-Farsi, Hebrew, and (with suitable TTF fonts) Urdu.
