Alias: In italics or in quotes in an indictment text?

Suppose the defendant's name is Juan Perez alias El Gato. Should I put "El Gato" in italics or quotes when translationg into Spanish? My understanding is that when the nickname or alias accompanies the name, it is written in italics.

Good question, and I was thinking about it this morning: how is it Mexico?

I've seen, as far as I remember:

1.- Juan Pérez, a. El Gato
2.- Juan Pérez, alias El Gato
3.- Juan Pérez, a. "El Gato"
4.- Juan Pérez, alias "El Gato"
5.- Juan Pérez (a. El Gato)
6.- Juan Pérez (alias El Gato)
7.- Juan Pérez, "El Gato"

I must say I don't remember El Gato in italics and that I don't know the rule, if any.

Different clients have different preferences and these preferences differ among languages. In http://www.wradio.com.co/nota.asp?id=295613 , they use two different sets of punctuation marks for the same alias on the same site, which is an indication that usage is not consistent. So the best thing is to ask your client if that's feasible.

I advice to search the official page of the Real Academia de Española (http://www.rae.es/) " Consultas lingüísticas" and ask them the question. You may get an aswer within two or three days.

Meantime, I checked the Spanish grammar books I used in my Master's, and authors agree on using quotation marks. Two possibilities are: Juan Pérez, conocido como "El Gato", or just Juan Pérez "El Gato".
