Most of us have created Word docs of relevant material cut and pasted from the WWW, just to research up on background for a translation.
So we have all created 'corpora' of one kind or another.
However, how about being able to analyse these corpora, using special tools (all free), some web-based, some downloadable?

Or how about learning how to go about creating a 'proper' corpus, i.e. applying criteria that would ensure you were using the 'language of the domain' correctly (yes, it's not just about terminology, it's about style, register, choosing among similar words, removing source language interference, etc.)
When we use Google, we rely on intuition. But intuition can be misleading, especially as we are usually not field experts (i.e. in an ideal world only doctors - who can rely on 'intuition and observation' - would translate medical texts).
But if we apply a more systematic analysis to texts in a corpus, we rely less on intuition, which can sometimes betray us.
And as I said, there are tools to do this, for the level of specificity you wish.
Corpus analysis has great potential for translation - most particularly for translators who specialise or who wish to specialise - yet it seems to be little used - although it's used a lot already in the ELT field, for language learning purposes.
So getting to the point, a colleague and I are giving a workshop soon (for details click on the link below) on using corpora for translation purposes, and I'm inviting you to come along.
Our focus is eminently practical, and you'll come away knowing how to use a corpus analyser (or two).
Note also, that even though I have posted this in EN and the workshop is EN with EN examples, these tools support other languages.

That sounds very interesting and I would haved attended had I been given much longer notice. As it is, I will be in England on7th July.
But if it is an annual event, I will attend next year.
The process makes sense and if the corpus building is made easier, it would be of great help.

... but unfortunately I too have a conflict. I would definitely be interested in attending if the conference is held again, or perhaps in purchasing material from the conference (I see that some of the software is available online).
