Translations of official, government, etc. bodies

Every now and again, a question pops up:

What is the equivalent of this or that official body in France, the US, your country, the moon...

What, in your opinion, would be the right approach to this translation issue, given that there usually are no strict equivalents (even in the E.U.)?

Thanks for your responses!

"The equivalent" may not be "the translation" Mar 25, 2003

If an equivalent is requested, I usually look at function. The translation, however, is another question altogether. For example, every state has a public tax administration apparatus, but if you don\'t know the target country, it would be hard to pinpoint the equivalent. In an exteme case, I once localised such an office, only to have the official name changed by decree after two months. And finding a generic term may be complicated.

The moon. Still very reachable, and a lot easier so far as languages are concerned.

The BEST way, is to ask the clients what he wants. Does he want translation, or does he want equivalents?

Once you know what you are looking for, give the official glossaries a shot (NATO,...whatever applies) and the dictionnaries too, ...

If still no luck, and that you *have to* come up with a translation, figure several way, and make some researches on google to see how the problem was handled by you collègues.

If nothing goes, well, you can hope that one of your pal on kudoz know the answer.
