Hello,

After posting my question in the wrong place ( sorry...) I will try my luck here...

Hello,

After posting my question in the wrong place ( sorry...) I will try my luck here...

I am looking for an English to French sort of glossary/dictionary of the most basic terms in fantasy literature (or even RPGs): weaponry/armors, "little folk" and evil creatures, and so on. Online would be a plus.
Of course Wikipedia and intensive Googling do give some clues, but I was hoping for a single tool specialised in that matter.
I am not sure such a database exists, though...
Has anybody heard of something like that?...

Thank you very much in anticipation. Have a nice (end of?) day.

Hi,

I'm not sure whether there are many bilingual glossaries/dictionaries for RPGs and the like. You might come across the right terminology in the various walkthroughs and guides available on the Internet for games like World of Warcraft, Baldur's Gate, and so on.

Having said that, I might have a couple of resources for you:

http://www.dnd.rushland.eu/Telecharge/Glossaire_D&D_3.5[EN-FR].pdf (a D&D glossary)
http://www.ddminis.fr/Glossaire-Regles.html

If you've got access to Microsoft's French English glossaries, you'll see that there's a file for the game that they produced a few years back (Dungeon Siege), which might come in handy.

Hope that helps,

Simon

World of Warcraft Europe is headquartered in France, and they have online forums. You will most definitely find "Terms" (and in-game slang) in there.

Also, you might consider (if you have the time...) getting a free trial in WoW or another game and playing for 10 days or so on both English and French-language servers. It'll give you a bilingual crash course in all things MMORPG.... See more

Unless you are a very strong-willed individual, stay away from WoW! You'll find thousands of deadlines looming on you by inadvertedly having spent 12 hours straight grinding levels on your 9th alt... or so I am told, of course

p.d. My dream job is localizing WoW in LatAm Spanish... now that would be something!

@ Rossana - level 70 Sorcerer and level 50 Hunter - but it hasn't REALLY kept me from my work. An iron will every so often will do the trick, hehe.

Have fun!

Is BOW in French? Mar 27, 2008

I don't play BOW myself, but it is translated into many languages, including yours:

http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/FrenchTranslation

The translations are in PO format. You can get the latest French translation via SVN and convert it to TMX or CSV using the Translate Toolkit.

Thank you all, really. You are very kind indeed.
Hmm and well, thanks Rossana for the warning about WoW... I didn't know that drug and shall stay away from it... at least until I can at last remove the "Beware of the busy rabid translator" sign hanging on my door... for yes, Kathinka's level 70 Sorcerer and level 50 Hunter sound oh so attractive... But my will is weak, alas, and that kind of games a real addiction to me.
