Hi everyone,

I'm quite new for all CAT Tools. I just wondering if all CAT Tool are Wordfast, Trados, SDLX, DejaVu and SDL Trados? These Trados, SDLX, SDL Trados really make me confuse, are SDL Trados the same as Trados or SDLX? And could you please tell me the price i I would like to buy this Trados or SDL Trados? I guess it's pretty expensive.

Bee

Hi Bee,
There's also OmegaT. I can't think of any others at the moment .
About SDL Trados and other tools that work with Trados, you can find information at http://translationzone.com/en/products/ and of course in this forum, by doing a forum search, if you haven't done so already. Use keywords such as CAT tools and Trados.

Try the free demos before you buy May 9, 2008

As you have guessed, Trados is quite expensive, and although it has its advantages, it remains expensive because new versions and updates appear all the time.

Many CAT tools offer a free demo version. The Trados one is somewhat limited, but you can get an idea of the central functions.

I do not know much about the other CATS, but Wordfast is getting popular, and is much cheaper. The free demo version is said to be good.

You may find there are differences when you use different alphabets. Again, I don't know, but this is another reason for trying out a free version before you spend a lot of money.

Even with European languages and the so-called Roman alphabet, Trados can play havoc with the formatting if the codes are set wrongly in the source file.

When they work, CATS are great, but when you run into problems they can drive you mad. At other times you can solve the problem easily and just start again using your backup file... Different CATs suit different people... and different types of jobs.

Good luck!

SDL and Trados May 12, 2008

Hello,

I work for SDL Trados.

I just thought I clarified our product.

SDL Trados is one company and SDL Trados 2007 includes both Trados and SDLX environments.

Trados Synergy Dashboard
Translator's Workbench - Manages translation memory for Trados side of the tool

SDL MultiTerm - terminology management
SDLX 2007 - the full SDLX package for side-by-side translation
WinAlign - for creating translation memories from existing documents

You can open bilingual files in Trados format from SDLX and vice-versa. However the translation memories are in different formats. Furthermore you can use SDL MultiTerm for terminology from both Trados or SDLX environment.

I hope this helps.

Wordfast vs. Trados May 13, 2008

I have been using Wordfast for 3 years and bought Trados at the last TGB.

I find Wordfast is much easier to use and so far have not discovered any advantages of Trados that justify its price and complicatedness.

From my experience, I'd recommend Wordfast unless you get a lot of .ttx files.

I haven't got any personal experience with other CAT tools, but also heard good things about DejaVu (not sure which version).

@ Cristina:

Most clients appreciate a good translation more than the tool that has been used to create it.
A CAT tool should make your work easier and give you tools and time to focus on the quality of your product, which is what the client will appreciate.

That said, it depends a lot on the field you are working in. Especially in technical/engineering/automotive there are large agencies that already have huge TMs in formats that are suited to certain CAT tools (often Trados or DejaVu). Some of them can be opened in other tools as well, but this can require tricky workarounds. If you get or hope to get a lot of work from an agency that asks for a specific tool, getting this tool may be worthwhile.

Another CAT tool May 31, 2008

I'm the developer of another CAT tool that I haven't seen mentioned here:

Felix the CAT Tool (formerly known as TransAssist)
felix-cat.com

Like most other CAT tools, it has a free trial version and an online demo. It's also far less expensive than Trados, and slightly less expensive than Wordfast (if you live in certain countries).

Trados / Déjà Vu / WordFast Jul 25, 2008

Hi everyone !
I’ve been through a few forums and collected useful information but would really have advice from those among you who have been fully trained on the 3 CAT tools : Déjà Vu, Trados and WordFast...

So, beside the price, what is your verdict ? Which one is :
The most complete ?
The most user-friendly ?
More targeted for Project manager ?

So, beside the price, what is your verdict ? Which one is :
The most complete ?
The most user-friendly ?
More targeted for Project manager ?
More targeted for freelance translators ?
Offers the possibility of creating multilingual prompts within Word ?
(I’m thinking about a tool that would ideally allow me to have multilingual prompts while pointing at words in Word - the way it already does when there are misspellings)

Also, which one has the best ergonomic design ?

And with which one can we create our own more-efficient-than-Excel multilingual glossary ?

THANK YOU !!!
Please email me your answers only if you are proficient in at least 3 CAT tools!

When you come to a restaurant you obviously do not care what sort/make/brand of knife the chef used to prepare a salad for you.

You care about salad....
