Do you know any website on which there are lots of second-hand books being sold at quite favorable rates?

My husband is a part-time film reviewer and alway buys a great number of books from abroad. He tells me nearly each of his bought used books, which usually contain hundreds of pages, only costs less than USD 20, it is possible?

Thank you for your replies.

Regards,

Virginia

green metropolis Jun 6, 2008

I use green metropolis, at https://www.greenmetropolis.com
But not sure if they are willing to send books abroad. Amazon actually sells second-hand books too.

What exactly are you looking for? Jun 6, 2008

Hi. Are you looking for books in English to help you learn Dutch? We have a great second-hand book shop chain here called De Slegte. I'd be willing to find and send books to you, if you can afford it.

Abebooks Jun 6, 2008

Try www.abebooks.com.

It is actually a database of second-hand book traders and you can see online which book sellers have the book you want and compare prices.

Best,
Eva

Amazon or Google Jun 6, 2008

I buy most of my books from Amazon (amazon.cn in your case) but Google has a Shopping Search which is very useful. It searches the products among large stores and also independent stores and even Ebay (although the ebay results are not updated by the hour). It shows the results by relevance, rating or price.

Amazon is expensive for used books. Jun 6, 2008

Amazon does not actually sell used books, but they guide you to affiliates that do – and since each one adds a mark-up, it becomes expensive.
Use www.abebooks.com it is much better.

I am in China where, besides our mother tongue, English is the dominant language! Jun 6, 2008

There are not many practical books of other languages here.

For example, I have a law diploma, the bachelor of law, and spend several years focusing on legal translation.

So far I have translated lots of contracts, agreements, MOUs, articles of associations, and so on, from EN and ZH.

If I want to further my legal French, I will become mired in difficulties, because almost no such kind of applied French book is being sold on the Chinese market.

If I want to further my legal French, I will become mired in difficulties, because almost no such kind of applied French book is being sold on the Chinese market.

Therefore, I plan to buy some books, which are written in English and another language and can help me improve my professional translating and interpreting experiences.

Although there are more and more colledge students learning FR and DE and obtain language diplomas after graduation, they cannot translate legal or other professional materials at all without further education in their future careers.

powells.com Jun 6, 2008

Also, alibris.com and half.com.

I have bought from all three of them and was very happy with their service. Not sure, though, if they would ship abroad.

In case you're not familiar with this book, I consider it an absolutely must-have book for legal translators. It's wonderful.

ThriftBooks Jun 6, 2008

I've bought books from www.thriftbooks.com in the past. They have mostly fiction (I think, haven't looked at any other categories) for USD 0.01, and shipping costs are around USD 2.50 to 3.00 per book...

Good luck!

Radindesbois Jun 7, 2008

"radin" means tightwad, so there's a pun with Robin des Bois = Robin Wood in French.
http://www.radindesbois.com/
Individuals resell second-hand products ranging from clothes to hi-fi and books.
I really like this site and its philosophy: 5% of the amount is refunded to the French NGO "Action Contre la Faim". French site.
