Hi,

I'm hoping that some kind person out there may be able to help me ... I'm currently studying to be a legal translator with the support of my boss (an experienced translator) and through independent study (with plans to do a degree in law in the near future) and I'm looking for some good Italian to English legal resources, whether textbooks, dictionaries, websites or glossaries to provide good foundations during the learning process and for translation some time down the line. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd be grateful for any recommendations.

Thanks in advance

My two cents Dec 9, 2008

Hi Gemma,
during the Master's in translation I followed, my teacher suggested me the web site of SIMONE LIBRERIE GIURIDICHE. You can find various legal texts and also some legal dictionaries to consult on-line :http://www.dizionarionline.it/

For legal and Commercial dictionaries we have West Law Commercial and Zanichelli. Of course there are many other good dictionaries (Oxford University Press, Cambridge, Regents Publishing Company, and others. It is merely a matter of costs. For that you just have to shop around. You can also start trying with http://www.lai.com/lai/companion.html

I hope you can find something useful here.
Good luck

You can find a comprehensive list of sources here:

http://www.nyulawglobal.org/globalex/Italy.htm

Try to get hold of a textbook to get the basics. In many texts you find a lot of terminology in its context. No glossary can beat this.

er... not cheap! Maybe you can find it in a library.

or Certona (1985) The Italian Legal System, if still available.

is there an Italian equivalent of France's Maison du Dictionnaire? Dec 10, 2008

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone tell me if there is an Italian equivalent to the Maison du Dictionnaire ["Dicoland"] in Paris, an online store that sells just about any French-Foreign Language, Foreign Language-French dictionaries one could imagine?

Thanks

Observation:

It is often difficult to do accurate legal translations without a solid background in comparative law, i.e. common law vs. Roman law or for example International Private law
