To Yahoogroups users: what is going on? Thread poster: Maria Eugenia Farre

As some of you may have noticed, Yahoogroups has been down for almost 24 hours. I don\'t know exactly what is going on. They may be just be integrating the Clubs to the Groups or something fishier could be underway. I don\'t want to sound the trumpets of doom, but there have been persistent rumors that Yahoo is thinking of charging for the service. There was a survey up for about 10 days and references to this possible change can be found elsewhere on the Web. Yahoogroups hosts a myriad translation-related mailing lists, some of which have large archives, which could be lost since the proposed storage limit (as seen in the survey) is too low. I would like to hear if anyone has sounder information on what is going on at Yahoogroups. To GlossPost members: I would like to reassure you that the message archive is fully backed up. The glossaries are safe, even if we may have to move them elsewhere.

Maria,
I tried logging on earlier only to be told that extensive network maintenance is being done and that it will take a while to get back online. Doesn\'t sound too fishy to me - it happened right here on proz recently

Nothing \"doom-like\" is going on. A colleague advised members of a translation mailing list that they\'re doing maintenance on Yahoogroups. They also advised members not to re-send messages since all messages would be queued and sent once the maintenance is done.
So get ready for a flood later on today!

Hi Maria,
I haven\'t heard anything like that and I think (and I hope) it\'s only normal maintenance: I saw the same fatty guy smiling to me through the monitor about one year ago (service down for 48 hours or so)... anyway, I\'ll contact some other moderators and see what they know/think.

Hi, Maria Eugenia.
I just got the first mail from one of the groups.
It seems to be working OK again.
Best regards,

The messages are rolling in. Get ready for the flood of \"test messages\".
They said to the media that the problem was hardware-related

Sure. The ads are bigger than before.

I have it from at least two people who are using these groups that Yahoo will be charging for this service before long - both of these people have already expressed interest in my services as a web-designer, as I am going to try and supply them with most, if not all the functionality Yahoo! groups currently has. In case you\'re in the same boat, write to me! | |

Dear members:
Please be aware that Yahoogroups will be down this weekend according to the information below.

Groups will be down for scheduled maintenance Friday Mar 15 9PM PST (GMT-8). We expect to restore service the morning of Sunday Mar 17.
More Info:
Dear Yahoo! Groups Members,
The Yahoo! Groups service will be down Friday March 15 9:00 PM PST (GMT-8) as we move our servers to a new facility. We expect the service to be back up the morning of Sunday March 17.
During this time the web site will be unavailable and email will not be delivered. (Some users may experience email non-delivery notices, but all email should be delivered once service has resumed.) Please note: once the service is back up, there will be email delays due to backlog. We expect these delays to last no longer than 1 day. Please do not re-send email to your group as it will only add to delays.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
The Yahoo! Groups Team
