Instant messaging can be a plague when you\'re trying to concentrate but it is also helpful when you are working in a team.

I\'ve always been annoyed by the fact that one of my buddies uses ICQ, the other uses Yahoo Msgr and I end up with three or four IM applications taking up space in my disk.

Enter Trillian, which lets you consolidate all your IM accounts in one neat package and has support for skins. It\'s early to tell how good it is as I\'ve just downloaded it.

But my first impression is positive.

But if you\'re interested, take a look at this freeware:

thanks Mar 13, 2002

Hi Maria Eugênia,

I agree with you. As for this software, thanks for your clue. I have just completed the download and I will be evaluating it.

Best Regards,

Paulo

It seems that there are some glitches on this software. I could not import my ICQ contact list.

AIM Translator and ICQ list in Trillian Mar 13, 2002

Hi Paulo,

There is a manual add option. Bummer, I know.

I chose that so I don\'t know if it would have suceeded in importing my ICQ list.

The contacts from my other accounts were imported, no problem.

And while on the subject of instant messaging systems, look what I just found:

AIM Translator.

Powered by PROMT-Reverso technology, by the way. Before somebody accuses me of being a detractor to the profession by pointing people to this software, I think that the AIM Translator could be instrumental in eliminating all those \"How do I say I love you?\" questions from the KudoZ forums. I suspect that most of the non-proz posters are all into some sort of IM-powered relationships.

Really, I\'ve never seen so much love in this world as in the KudoZ questions!

ME

Also Jabber Mar 13, 2002

Also, Windows, Mac, and Unix users can use Jabber. It can communicate with IRC, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, and MSN (although AOL has a habit of blocking it..). Downloads:

Unix:

Mac:

http://jabberfox.sourceforge.net/download.php

Windows:

It\'s also Open Source Free Software, which is a Good Thing (tm).

JabberIM looks clunky Mar 13, 2002

Hi Jason,

I tried it out too. But the interface looks so clunky! Trillian is cute.

Unfortunately, Trillian is not the solution :-( Mar 13, 2002

Hi M. Eugênia,

I\'ve tried Trillian for some time, but it didn\'t work well. I was sucessful with MSN, and Yahoo Messengers, but it is impossible to integrate AIM, since AOL software team are always creating new ways to avoid this integration. AOL is publicaly against any kind of integration. See an NYT article extract below:

All is not bliss on the instant messaging front, however. Last week, AOL blocked Trillian users from logging on to Instant Messenger. Trillian promptly issued a new version that sidestepped AOL\'s preventive measures.

\"We see it as hacking,\" said Kathy McKiernan of AOL. She added that AOL was waiting for the Internet Engineering Task Force to develop a standard for connecting the different messaging programs.

All of which raises the question, When? A member of the task force committee addressing the issue says that two relevant proposals will be discussed at the next I.E.T.F. meeting in Minneapolis in mid- March and that a recommendation may come as soon as this summer. Now if someone would just develop a protocol that pre- empts all the \"Age/Sex/Location\" instant- messaging requests from teenagers looking for love.

So far so good Mar 18, 2002

Hi Marcia,

I\'ve been using Trillian for a week now and I got all of my accounts integrated including AIM.

It\'s a dynamic world. The AIM moguls will put a barrier but somebody else will break it. We\'ve seen it happen with MP3s. The important thing is to be on the lookout for the new kids on the block, the neat software that thinks outside the box. I confess I am a download junkie. I install 2 or 3 new apps every week.

Bjs,

ME
