I have just come across a wonderful guide published by the American Translators' Association (ATA), aimed at "non linguists that need to buy a translation". I believe it is a most useful document that clarifies most of the doubts (and misconceptions!) that clients -or anyone not familiar with the translation business- might have.

It can be downloaded from ATA's web page, at: http://www.atanet.org/Getting_it_right.pdf

I believe I will encourage all my clients/prospective clients to read it, and hope for no more headaches or misunderstandings trying to explain the advantages of hiring professional translators and paying their worth!
I hope if proves helpful to you too!

The ITI from the United Kingdom also has some pretty good (IMHO) publications.

For translators:

Can I echo that sentiment and add a couple of comments of my own:

This is an initiative by Chris Durban and Antonio Aparicio which the ATA is supporting, as distinct from an ATA initiative. The ITI is also supporting it.

The brochures are available in several languages.

I encourage people with web sites to put links on their sites to the online versions.
