Let's start with the classic Roget's Thesauri.

Get even more creative with the Online Edition of the Visual Thesaurus™.

What about that situation when the word is on the tip of your tongue, but you can't quite think of it? Or you can think of two related words but the one you want is somewhere in the intersection of the two, yet you can't put your finger on it? Try the OneLook Reverse Dictionary. Enter a definition, several related words, or even just a single word. Although you get a long list of words that may include some laughably irrelevant results, it is easy to scan the list to find the word you were looking for. Each result is linked to definitions in a variety of dictionaries, allowing you to explore possible solutions further. This resource seldom fails me--if the missing word exists, the Reverse Dictionary finds it.

The Lexical FreeNet is another powerful hyper-thesaurus. Searches offer the following options:

-Show related: Find words related to the first word
-Connection: Find connections between the words
-Show reachable: Find words reachable within [n] links
-Intersection: Find words reachable from both words
-Rhyme coercion: Find related words that rhyme
-Spell check: Find words spelled similarly to the first
-Substring: Find words containing the first as a substring
