I am in search of online and print resources for the translation of patents. Any good recommendations? A good German->English glossary would be very helpful! Even better would be examples of patent disclosures in English.

Probably you know it already, but the USPTO's URL is:

Thanks Luis. The US Patent & Trademark site appears to be a very good source for 'patent language' and research, although I'm still trying to figure out how to print the TIFF files.

Thanks Kathi. Incidentally, how would you translate 'Offenlegungsschrift'? After browsing the US Patent & Trademark Office site I'm thinking that 'German Patent Application Publication' might be the appropriate term in the USA.

EPO Website May 17, 2004

The European patent office's website is a goldmine for anyone working in French/German/English. There are often parallel documents in all three languages.
www.european-patent-office.org

The Swiss and German national patent offices also have some of their websites in English.

What languages do you cover? May 17, 2004

For English > German I got once a very good textfile with rules for translators. I could send it to you privately.
And I have some papers of patent language Finnish, Swedisch, English, German, which I could scan and send to you.

German Patent Office site May 17, 2004

You may find the DEPATISnet service on the Web of the German Patent and Trade Mark Office helpful. You can search patents there, and not only German.
What helped me many a time, was a patent family search. This way you can find equivalent patents in different languages.

Good luck !

Websites for patents May 18, 2004

Try the following Robert:

http://195.31.239.2/patclass/patclass
(5 Language Terminological Dictionary with patent classification)

www.legamedia.net/lx/lx.php (Lega media - law and practice)

www.mayallj.freeserve.co.uk/patent.htm (Mayall's IP Links Patent Laws)

http://users.aber.ac.uk/dgw/patent.htm (Patents on the Internet)

There was also a useful Brevet-Patents 10 page German-French-English from Brian Huebner (Wanadoo) but it seems to have disappeared.
