Trados 2011: is it essential? How did you learn how to use it?

I don't know why some people say Trados 2009 is buggy. I have had far less trouble with it - after a course in how to use it properly - than many earlier versions. Admittedly I did not start until SP2 came out, and SP3 was definitlely an improvement. I am just starting on Trados 2011. So far so good...
I was dragged unwillingly into Trados 3.1... and struggled with a faulty dongle around trados 5.something or other. Trados 6.5 was good, and Trados 2007 is stable as long as it lasts, but Trados 2009 is absolutely my favourite tool - AND I have tried Deja Vu, a couple of terrible clients' own CATs and Wordfast Classic.
I too recommend Wordfast Classic for a beginner, but personally I soon get tired of the glossary function, and there is always far less in the concordance than with Trados, even using a conversion of the same TM. But it served as a very useful and reliable backup when Trados really was buggy!
I am sure there are other ways of doing the same work - and I use them when I get files that cannot be opened in a CAT. But I use Trados when I can, and maintian the glossaries in Multiterm, keep the TMs clean and so on.
Driving a car is difficult at first. Using a computer at all - or a sewing machine, or any other machine - is difficult until you get the hang of it. Some CATs are like that, but if you find one that suits you and the type of work you do, and use it correctly so that it doesn't crash... then it will not cramp your style, it will help you.
Trados 2009 and 2011 are not the only ones on the market. Get someone experienced to show you the tricks, and keep trying.
Best of luck!
I won't be around in 40 years' time, but I bet there will still be plenty of work for real, human translators, even if the computers are doing some of the repetitive work.
