Dictionaries of collocations Jun 24, 2004

The correct synonym depends on collocation.

Here are two books that give ample information about collocations in English:

Longman Language Activator
The Bbi Dictionary of English Word Combinations

You might be able to find more with this search.

This provides synonyms and antonyms, groups of synonims with figurative, positive and negative uses and a comparison between the words in the group and their relative suitability. There is also a cross-referencing index.

I worked for a number of years as a book editor and this was our bible for picking the nits, as was the Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Usage.

Book of english usage, on line Jun 29, 2004

This one is not directly related to synonyms, but gives the usage of hundreds of words, like able, above, between, former/latter, whilst, and so on.

Hope it will be helpful to you as it is to me. I really enjoy reading it.

Have you tried www.visualthesaurus.com? Aug 3, 2004

This paid service does not actually explain relations between synonyms nor it gives you the right choice in a context, but it is definitely _worth_ looking at when looking for synonyms.
