The LINGUIST List was founded in December 1990 by Anthony Rodrigues Aristar at the University of Western Australia with 60 subscribers. In 1991 Helen Dry became co-moderator of the list with Anthony. That same year it moved from Australia to Texas A&M University. At the same time, Eastern Michigan University was established as the main editing site for the list. In 1997 LINGUIST moved from Texas A&M to its own site, where it has been ever since. In mid 1998, Wayne State University in Michigan was established as the second editing site for the list.

The aim of the list is to provide a forum where academic linguists can discuss linguistic issues and exchange linguistic information.

An absolute must for anyone interested in linguistics and related topics with a huge amount of useful links.

- There\'s also an archived overview of very interesting mailing lists at:

http://linguistlist.org/list-archives.html

- You may also subscribe to the LINGUIST; the LINGUIST is a free service, and comes in two versions:

* the full-text version, called LINGUIST.

Readers of LINGUIST receive each LINGUIST issue as it is posted.

* a lower-calorie version, called LINGLITE:

Readers of LINGLITE receive only one LINGLITE issue a day. It lists the LINGUIST issues posted that day, giving:

the subject of each issue

the subject and author of each message

the URL where you can view the issue

LINGLITE is designed for people who typically read LINGUIST on the Web:

- Or if you\'re looking for a job, go to:

Jobs 2002 Issues

Believe me, this is one (more) site you should surely bookmark.

By the way, new contributions (links, articles,...) are always welcome - I already informed them about ProZ.com and a few other sites, let\'s now see if their moderators read our messages .

Have a nice day

Dear All:

Evert\'s announcement got me most excited and I rushed to check out the said list.

To my greatest disappointment, this is what I found (this morning, 4/24/2002) when following the link \"http://linguistlist.org\"

LINGUIST LIST KIDNAPPED!

We need your help to pay the ransom...\"

A rather bitter message follows, announcing that out of about 15 thousand subscribers roughly 500 have contributed so far.

If anyone has more recent info, please share...

TIA,

Ildiko V-W

I also got that black page a couple of minutes ago. Since I - and I believe, you as well - am among the 15300 who haven\'t donated, click where indicated. Then a form opens, but at the bottom of the page you see three links: Linguist Home, Read Linguist and something else. Click on Read Linguist and it should be OK

I just tried it once more (this time subscribing to their \'lite\' messages) and everything worked perfectly...
