I'm looking for some unbiased (no written by CAT tool companies) articles on CAT tools. Any ideas where I can find some?
Thanks,
Ricardo

Maybe not precisely unbiased--on Lantra the "Trados vs. DV" debate sometimes takes on the character of a religious war--but you can certainly hear all sides of the question at Lantra-L.

See http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7110/ltr2.htm for information on how to join. Since this is a very high-traffic list, I suggest that once you have joined, you put yourself on NO-MAIL status and search the archives.

(See http://segate.sunet.se/archives/lantra-l.html and click on "Search the archives".) See for example the thread "COMP: DV versus Trados yet again" in February 2004, week 3 for one of the most recent incarnations of the eternal debate.

This week (September 2004, week 1), there is a very well-balanced thread on the topic, "COMP: translation memory program" which also includes suggestions in favour of some of the less well-known programs.

Please bear in mind that the article is written in 2001.
For example: You have to pay for Wordfast now.
But on the other side it is no more buggy.
(In my opinion every cent and penny worth.)

But I really do miss the CAT fight feature by Proz.

After spending 10 years developing, testing, implementing (and writing reviews about) various language technology tools, I have just created a new language technology software review page a couple of days ago. It lists links to all known (independent) reviews as well as walkthrough articles by the vendors. The TM and MT reviews are categorized by year. It's available for free at:

http://www.geocities.com/langtecheval

Please send me links to more review articles if you know of any.

I've updated the Language Technology Software Review website

Comments from people who visited the site and provided feedback have been taken into consideration for the current update of the site. I've only been able to update the Machine Translation sections for now.

Some articles... Jun 24, 2005

I have a couple articles you may be interested in on www.your-translations.com. Be sure to look at the article "why wordfast?" which compares Trados and Wordfast.

Nothing is really unbiaised considering the writer, to even write on the subject, must have some personnal preferences.

The best way is probably to download one of them, give it a try and see if you like it.

By the time you have checked 4 or 5 of them, you will know what you want.

Cheers,
