Dear all,

I am doing some research on the varietes of
English in Africa. In fact, I am writing a little paper (for University) on Liberia's
English (or African English from other countries), and I am looking for a document or a little text written in
one of those countries. I need to mark out the main differences with standard
English and write a little paper on those contrasts, but I find it extremely difficult to find an appropriate text for this task.

I was wondering if you could help me, or could point out some sources where I could extract something similar.

Thank you for your kind attention!

Flavio

I don't know if this is the kind of text you want (individual authors could be idiosyncratic), but I'd say there is an interest in relatively neutral language in the news.

But if you want a colloquial sample, I'd suggest looking for on-line expat forums, where people discuss national issues with each other.

Literature... Feb 17, 2005

I'm not sure exactly what kind of text you're looking for, but the following are a few good links on African literature in English, including links to sites about famous African writers who write/wrote in English such as the Nigerian writers Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe. Sorry but I don't know of anything specifically related to Liberia.

Women's writing:

Nigeria

I hope that helps a little,
Aisha

BBC News... Feb 17, 2005

Have a look at the BBC website as well. If you go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and choose the world edition and choose Africa, you will find some discussions about issues affecting the continent that people from African countries have commented on. Interesting points of view and perhaps this is what you're looking for, e.g. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/4272077.stm

Hope that helps,
Good luck,
Aisha

Dear Flavio

I only know about Tanzania but you could try searching for newspapers, such as the Arusha Times.

Mek e de go read "The Palm Wine Drinkard" Feb 17, 2005

and "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" by Amos Tutola.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0802133630/103-7999134-7926213?v=glance

The latter, in particular, is written in Nigerian Pidgin and is a great and very creepy tale with the message that beauty is only skin deep.

I used to be a fluent pidgin speaker but "I no go Nigeria, time time".

I did a similar paper at University and found an excellent resource entitled "Pidgins and Creoles" - but I cannot remember the author(s). But I did just find this page for you written by a lecturer in the subject at my old Alma Mater the University of Essex.

Good luck with this fascinating subject,

Cheers,

Berni

PS Just found a Nigerian Pidgin / English Dictionary:

Here is the Declaration of Human Rights in Nigerian Pidgin:

Cool Berni Feb 18, 2005

I loved the sample, great read!

But your links got corrupted:

We have to tell the programmers how this "Edited" line spoils so much for us.

Do a google search for "Pidgins and Creoles" Feb 18, 2005

I remember the same resource being mentioned when doing English Language A-Level. Out of curiosity I did a google search for "pidgins and creoles" and found quite a lot of interesting sites, some even including examples.

Good luck!

Sarah
