I am posting this for a friend who is translating what she describes as a "German family biblical inscription from 1850." She is a German native and is simply doing this for a friend as a favor. As expected, she is struggling with some of the old biblical language. Does anyone know of some online resources that may help her define some of these terms that are not found in today's dictionaries.

Many thanks in advance for any advice you may have.

Best,
Matt

Yes. go and download for free different bibles from e-sword. May 4, 2005

Hi,
I have the best experiences with "e-sword" which is a free download software and includes a lot of different bible versions including old commentaries, and everything has it's own possibilities to search for old terms.
Warm regards
Elimar

Well if it's Biblical May 4, 2005

then why not use the Bible! Do they know which verses the text refers to? If so you can compare a Luther and an old King James translation. I have both at home, so they can contact me if you think it will help.

And then

Both sites are protestant.

Hope this helps.

Another one May 4, 2005

This one is very useful; it's multiligual, and you can look for specific passages or by keyword:

Thank you all! May 4, 2005

Thanks for the links!

Gillian, thanks for you offer as well. I will pass that along...I think she was hoping to find something online but I agree that simply comparing verses from different versions may do the trick. Take care!

Best,
Matt

With E-sword you really can do it much easier, I really am wondering, why this program is not more known. You can have two or three different versions of the bible, say a King James Version, a German Luther bible, and the latin vulgata, all of them you have first to download on your computer, and can compare them directly verse by verse, and read it parallel. Hey, we are living in the third millenium and no longer in the ages of Johan Gutenberg.

A German-English glossary May 7, 2005

On my own website:
http://www.dewsbery.de/Glossar/christen_1.html

It came out of a dictionary in book format which I was a co-author for several years ago (unfortunately no longer in print).
