Visit http://www.java.com . In the left side of the page there is an option to verify your Java installation. Use it and update your version if necessary.

I would guess the versions you have will be sufficiently up-to-date for TransJ but less sure they will be installed sytem-wide if they came with Netscape.
[Java applets are forever crashing Firefox on my machine.]

Java OK, but TransJ still doesn't work

Thanks for the hint. My Java is now up to date (confirmed when I verify the new installation).
But TransJ still does not work. When I double click on "run.vbs" I get an error box that says:
Java Virtual Machine Launcher
Could not find the main dass. Program will exit!

Softsky were very helpful when I was setting TransJ up over a year ago (I managed to unzip it without maintaining the directory structure).
