Hi,

I just bought the Sytran Pro Premium 5.0. I'm mainly
interested in translation to/from English/Japanese.
However, I found the software to be very unsatisfactory.
The translation from Japanese to English to way off(in term
of grammar and sentence structure). The translation is
basically word to work.

I hoping to find a MT post editing software or pre-editing
software that would solve this problem. I know that it is

These groups were created based upon a significant amount of interest generated from the professional translator community in the MT Tips page (http://www.geocities.com/jeffallenpubs/MT-tips.htm).

* As for a few specific Japanese system comments:

- I have Systran v5 European pack and Asian pack but have not yet had the opportunity to test the Asian language pack directions. A few people have told me in private that the JapaneseEnglish is not very good. However, no details of criteria of what good/bad (with samples) have been shown to me.
- LEC (www.lec.com) has JapaneseEnglish and possibly with other languages. They started with Japanese translation software before moving on to do other language pairs, so their software (LEC MagellanPro Translate 2005) might be an option. I have LEC MagellanPro Translate 2005, but have again not had the opportunity to test it yet. It is in the pile of requests for software to test.
- Fujitsu's Atlas software (with different rebaptized names like Translingo) was developed by the Japanese. I attended an in-depth technical overview of that software in 2001, and much that was presented was solid from a linguistic point of view for language directions between different language typologies. I have never tested that software.

I have given many MT tutorials and classes that cover a range of different MT software brands. My general statement to professional translators as well as to "non-professional" translators -- not meaning "unprofessional but rather that they have not been trained in translation, but must do it for their jobs -- (ie, bilingual secretaries, executives, human resources assistants, technical writers) is that someone with a professional/expert MT product who cannot master the tool to productively translate is usually more an issue of not being trained adequately on the tool, and its many hidden features, than a problem with the tool itself. The same is true with Translation Memory tools. And I also find a non-linguistic parallel with the Telecom-specific Business Intelligence reporting tools that I have been training users on for the past few years.
