Howdy folks,

I'm working on a project related to a sports simulation game wherein I'm trying to build a comprehensive file of surnames and male given names, and their frequencies.

I'm looking for data from as many nationalities as possible. Does anyone have suggestions for where I could find this information for any nationality? Some areas in particular that my data is lacking include:

Australia
Korean
Chinese
Other Asian (not Japanese)
Norwegian
Danish
Dutch
Portuguese
Brazilian
Greek
Anything in Africa

Any ideas welcomed!

Also, once I have the data compiled, I would love to have native-speaking volunteers to help check the accuracy of the file.

Incidentally, this is strictly volunteer stuff. No money will be changing hands. No links to fee-based database services, please!

Thanks very much!

Hello Steven,
Out of curiosity, I tried a couple of quick google searches. For starters, the two urls below look useful for you, and contain links to other resources re names by nationality.
Good luck with the project,
Diantha

Danish names Nov 28, 2005

Here is a top 20 of Danish male and female given names plus surnames: http://www.dst.dk/Statistik/Navne/pop/2005.aspx

Let me know if you need further help with Danish names.
I recently translated a kids computer games where I had to come up with over 400 given names.

Correction Nov 28, 2005

Hi, again!

Apparently the site I mentioned wasn't fully correct (unless you speak portuguese!).

Try this one instead:

This is great Jørgen! Is there anywhere we can come up with a list of more than 20 surnames or given names? I'm looking for as many as possible. (Only male given names though.)

These are given names, correct? Do you know, could these be used interchangeably with Portugal and Brazil, or would Brazil have different names?

Also, any ideas about Portuguese surnames?

Thanks! I love ProZ!

BTW, I just realized I have no data from India either!

If you want additional names from Statistics Denmark, you have to pay. In connection with the mentioned project I was on, I tried to can a longer list, but then they charge you...

Just found a top 50 for given names:
http://www.dst.dk/Statistik/Navne/bestemt_aar/20041.aspx
(Girls on the left, boys on the right, applies to newborns for that year).

BTW, I like Proz.com, too... However, it just caused me to burn dinner, which will certainly not please the wife Though, it seems I might have saved it, so she probably won't notice...

Best regards,
Jørgen

Brazil does have different names, but the list I sent you already includes quite a few of those names, because the brazilian comunity living in Portugal is quite big.

As for surnames, i'm still looking...
