Does anyone know of an internationally-recognised web site that lists the most spoken languages in the world?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you, Pepelu and Olga, but I am not sure what the criteria are Aug 22, 2002

Let us take Polish, for instance, which is listed as no. 24 on the first list, but not on the second one (that is why it is interesting to compare them). I do not understand the criteria of choice of countries where Polish is spoken. Outside Poland, the largest Polish speaking communities live in the United States, Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania. None of those countries is listed in the first ranking. (The overall figure is corroborated though by SIL Ethnologue which reports that 44 million people worldwide speak Polish, making it number 24 on their list of Top 100 World Languages by Population.)

Another interesting thing: Of the few million US residents who declare to be \"Polish\" certainly not all \"speak Polish\" (and even when they do, some of them had better not). In fact, the 1990 Census reported that only 700,000+ Americans speak Polish at home, making Polish number 7 on the Top 50 Languages Spoken in the U.S. (for details see http://www.ethnicharvest.org/regions/50languages.html

Jacek's website seems very odd Aug 22, 2002

For example, I am sure there are far more Russian speakers in Belarus and Ukraine than there are in Israel!
