I have a rather large bibliography to transliterate from Russian into English (Cyrillic to Latin script).

Does anyone know if there is an freely available methods for automating this process?

Lots of free stuff .... Sep 16, 2006

Hi Alan,

A search for 'transliteration cyrillic latin' finds lots of bits and pieces of sioftware for this, such as:

I guess the main problem will be ensuring the system uses the correct cross-referencing table - where 'correct' means the one *you* want, as opposed to the ones other people like to use. Again, the web will help you decide what's best in your situation.

Failing all else, seeing as you're a computer boffin, it would not be difficult to 'roll pour own' converter.

Regardless of how you do it, be aware that you may encounter problems if the source text is not in Unicode, because there used to be several different cyrillic font codings and converters will not like stuff they don't recognise. I recall the horrendous problems I had merging a Russian glossary built using TermPC (a 1980s DOS program develioped by Siemens) into Access.
