Please pardon my ignorance in this regard. One of our project managers needs enlightenment on this, where to find them etc.

Many thanks in advance

Urdu Fonts and Word-processing - additional considerations Oct 9, 2002

Greetings.

In addition to downloading and installing the desired Urdu TTF fonts, insure that your PC\'s operating system (OS) will (1) include support with right-to-left (RTL) drivers and (2) you have a proper Urdu keyboard layout diagram.

Perhaps the easiest method to install that RTL driver is that your PC has an OS of either MS Windows 2000 or XP (better) and you install compatible bidirectional support from the OS\' multilanguage support feature.

Select and install (regional settings > language) and install the Arabic support (select \"Saudi Arabia,\" as other Arabic dialects shown in the drop-down list are not fully supported) that is included in the basic software CD.

Second thing is to do web searches so you can find and print out the suitable Urdu keyboard diagram. The Urdu keyboard layout is larger and different from those for Arabic and Farsi.

While there are some Urdu-supported word-processing programs that install and work smoothly inside an English-only OS, they reportedly have difficulties - and some encoding conflicts - when sending or receiving Urdu-text files online.

An excellent Urdu translator I know in Pakistan usually copies and pastes Urdu-text files inside a MS Word box for e-mailing. That method delivers the text, but the recipient cannot edit or manipulate the text after the file has been opened.

HTH. Good luck.,

Regards from Los Angeles,

S. H. Franke

Kurdish, and Farsi)
