Hi all,

I have been using Babylon with English texts for a number of years now and I really love it.

I was wondering, though, if Babylon can recognize Arabic text, too, and whether there are Arabic glossaries to incorporate in it.

Many thanks,
Noha

It seems to work Sep 27, 2006

Hi Noha,

I just checked at http://www.sis.gov.eg/Ar/ and my Babylon functions.

قراءة = search/read function (COMPUTER)

etc. Click on the Arabic term above and then on Online Glossaries to check if the dictionaries are any good. There seem to be some problems with Microsoft compatibility but I didn't have any.

Regards,
Gerard

Not sure what you mean! Sep 27, 2006

Salut Gerard,

Merci pour ta reponse. I am not sure, however, exactly what you mean. Let me just tell you that I already have Arabic to English glossaries installed. Yet, when I click on any Arabic word, I still get no results. Yet, Babylon can recognize the Arabic characters. That is why I am a bit confused. Are there any other Arabic glossaries that I can install? Also, any special settings to configure, for instance?

Merci encore une fois...

still can't recognize arabic text Sep 28, 2006

Thanks a million, Ahmad. I did download it, knowing that I already have several Arabic into English glossaries. But for some reason, Babylon still can't recognize Araic characters at all. Any idea about necessary configuration or settings?

Thanks in advance.

Did you read this in Babylon?

Description: Arab to German Glossary. A preliminary version aimed at reading Arab Webpages such as www.aljazeera.net. It is compiled from publicly available sources. Many words are still missing and I have a lot to work on incorporating Arab grammar (especially verb forms and plurals). The Arab2English glossary has been tested to work with the Webbrowsers Mozilla, Firebird and Opera. This glossary does not work well with Microsoft Internet Explorer and other Microsoft Software such as Microsoft Word. This is neither my fault nor that of Babylon, I think. But to the best of my knowledge the Arab language routines used by Microsoft are faulty. Keep updating. I'll appreciate your feedback to [email protected]

No. of definitions: 102643

Maybe you need another browser to get it to work on your system.

Regards,
Gerard

Hi,

I do have the glossaries you named, and I use Mozilla Firefox. But, Babylon is still stubborn and won't read Arabic

I also checked the settings you pointed out, but no use

I am just curious whether Bbaylon can only read Arabic in webpages and not in all sorts of files like it does in English.

Thanks in advan

It doesn't work in Word on my system Sep 28, 2006

I just saved this page to my desktop and opened it in Word. I'm afraid قراءة wasn't recognised on my system. I guess you'll have to ask the developers at Babylon why this doesn't seem to work.

Success,
Gerard
