TIS is an acronym for the Terminological Information System of The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. The system was designed as a working tool for Council translators and has enabled the Terminology Service to provide a database of terms and abbreviations in the languages of the Communities.

The languages available are Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Irish, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Latin. Subject areas include agriculture, environment, atomic energy, harmonisation of legislation and food processing.

The system currently contains over 200 000 records, 45% of which contain entries in three or more languages. Records are gradually becoming truly multilingual: some 25 000 records now contain five languages or more. Database growth is currently of the order of 4 000 translations per month.
