Hi to all,

I'm trying to find free weblinks where I can read models of legal documents in French and in English, right now the urgency is a power of attorney for a Corporation (procuration) that has to "sound good".

Thanks!

I often go to Findlaw to search for sample legal documents in that site's Document Library.

http://www.findlaw.com/

Or Google "sample power of attorney."

Some companies also sell sample legal forms.

HTH!

What about the English phrase at the very beginning of the document above:
"KNOW all persons by these presents that I...";
"SACHEZ tous par les présentes que je..."?

Isn't this a too direct translation from French? It might be thought of as correct if analysed word by word, but the turn of the phrase seems somewhat bizarre/heavy.
I web-searched for the phrase, and it returned mostly North American websites (including, but not only, .us and .ca), but hardly any .uk sites.
Moreover, "par les présentes" is translated simply as the usual legal English "hereby" later in the document.

If someone uses the above document as a model, how should they treat this?

P.S. Reading the phrase made me remember the humorously notorious "all your base are belong to us". Never mind!

Another link Mar 18, 2007

Thanks for the link, it's useful and interesting.
Some parts in English and in French (as: "doing business /faisant affaires") sound unusual to me, maybe it has to do with Canadian expressions that are not commonly used in Switzerland. But overall it's a good reference.

Actually I always translate "KNOW all persons by these presents"

by

"Par la présente" (ou "par les présentes"), even if "hereby" is also translated similarly.

Maybe you

Maybe you know this link, as (if I remember correctly) I found it through Proz.com :

I used www.findlaw.com in the past to purchase a contractor service agreement. Lately however, I needed a power of attorney and I visited other online providers of legal forms such as http://www.legalmessenger.com and http://www.nolo.com to mention a couple. I wanted to shop arround and compare what they offer. I found sometimes that these online providers of legal forms charge a different price for virtually the same product/service. Sometimes the price difference is significant. I wonder what justifies this price variation!
