Can anyone recommend an authoritative style guide for technical English (preferably US English)? I am looking for something that would cover such things as the correct notation for such things as data transmission rates (kbit/s, Mbit/s, etc.) and other units of measure, as well as more general style conventions.

A CD ROM version would be a bonus.

The IEEE style guide looks pretty good for me. It does have sections on units of measure.

http://standards.ieee.org/guides/style/2007_Style_Manual.pdf

The Apple Publications Style Guide, chock full of units of measurement in the IT field and how to use them:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/APStyleGuide/AppleStyleGuide2006.pdf

IBM Style (for obvious reasons):

All the best!

Hey, it's always a pleasure to help - it was easy!

By the way, IBM Style is a great document - detailed and written in a style a 6th grader can understand.

All the best!
