I wonder does anybody have useful experience of the concordance database TransSearch? This is a link to its help page in English. I wonder does anybody have useful experience of the concordance database TransSearch? This is a link to its help page in English. It claims: "TransSearch is a database of past translations: it gives you access to millions of sentences that have been translated between English and French, and English and Spanish.
TransSearch is a bilingual concordancer: You submit a word or expression in English, French or Spanish; TransSearch displays all the sentences in which they appear, along with their translation."
It looks as though it might be very useful for translation work in these languages, but of course that will depend on the subject fields. It's not free: you can have a free trial for five days, then one year subscription for one user costs 130 Canadian Dollars plus tax.
I'm surprised it's hardly been mentioned in these Forums. (If you want to find mentions, you need to search for "transearch" - I found just 2 mentions, in October 2005.)

There is a similar tool called "Contextrans" provided for free by www.lingo24.com.
It supports Arabic, Chinese & German so far. They say they will add new languages in the future.

It supports Arabic, Chinese & German so far. They say they will add new languages in the future.

Thanks for that information. Well, I tried its German>English capability and each of the following, that gave me some pause for thought in a recent translation, produced "no results":
ausgemustert
Paßwort
modal
Leinwand
Erfahrung der ewigen Gegenwart
Raumkapsel
Spiegelzeit
I find that surprising for all except the last 2 of these. However, I'm sure it's useful in some cases; in fact I'm adding it to my list of useful websites: I tried a more common word "Gegenwart" and it produced about 15 sentence pairs, stating which of the possible meanings was applicable to each one.

My experience with this tool Mar 18, 2007

Based on my experience with Lingo24 tool, I found it useful in the area of legal terms. Otherwise, it's not quite useful.

But it should be better in the near future if they are feeding it with more translations.
