Dear all,

I\'ve received the following message from one of the discussion groups and I\'d like to know if anybody has more information about it. Could it be just a rumor?

For those who can\'t speak Spanish, here\'s a brief summary:

Eurodicautom is supposedly going to be closed down as of March 2003 (no reason stated). Jose Aguilar is going to launch a petition against the closing down.

Follows forwarded message:

parecido buena idea. Ahí va el borrador (se agradecerá cualquier

sugerencia):

\"It has come to our attention that EURODICAUTOM may no longer be available

to the public as of March 2003. Eurodicautom has become an essential

resource for terminology research for translators worldwide. We would like

to ask the relevant European Union officials to reconsider such a decision,

if it has been made, for the good of the international community of

translators.

Respectfully,\"

Jose Aguilar

Such a move would make terrorism tempting indeed! Dec 16, 2002

The European Union is all about promoting the economic, political and social development of Europe in a world that is getting far too globalized far too fast.

Translators are a vital buffer and medium to contain side effects of globalization that are very negative for every pilot and passenger of the Spaceship Earth.

Public access to Eurodicautom should be a basic civil right of absolutely anyone who needs it enough to key in the URL, even if only 20% of visitors are translating documents that will directly or indirectly the economic growth of the European Union.

The world desperately needs a second, third and even fourth superpower.

Any move to restrict access to Eurodicautom is economic, political and social treason to the European Union.

Taxes Dec 16, 2002

Indirectly the free use of Eurodicautom benefits the Member-States too.

Contrary to inhouse EU-translators (exempt from national taxes), all European, non-inhouse EU-translators are tax-payers too. They act as VAT-tax-collectors, pay (VAT)-tax-advances as well as extra local taxes and hefty social security contributions.

The more productive a freelancer (by the use of on-line terminological databases) is the more tax a Member-State can levy on that freelancer.

Taxes and Eurodicautom Dec 16, 2002

William\'s argument is spot on and should be used when making any petition not to close Eurodicautom.

To get back to Maria Eugenia\'s question.

Yes, I think that it will close down if we do nothing about it. I have received several messages from very reliable sources regarding this. It would be helpful if someone would post some names and addresses of relevant people to whom we can write so that we can start bombarding them with our outrage.

Spanish forum Dec 16, 2002

Hola,

The mesage at the end is in the Spanish forum...

Summary: we have to wait to see what is going on but many people are suggesting we write to our Euro Representatives and request information or non-closure of the site and/or an alternative to this tool

Ciao,

JL

La fuente dice: let us wait

\"Hola:

No sé si no

It is our service, I think. Dec 16, 2002

Do the European taxpayers pay for the translation services? Or does the money come from somewhere else?

I think we are entitled to free access in the future as well, even though the Swedish section of Eurodicautom is not very rich.

Indispensable!! Dec 17, 2002

Hi,

I\'ve received this info thru the Danish Association of Translators. Perhaps it adds more info to the discussion... (and yes, our tax money is spent - partly - on services such as eurodicautom, so we should have access. Perhaps \"limiting\" the access by having to register will take some of the pressure of the site??):

A Spanish translator is reporting that one of the terminologists

responsible for Eurodicautom, Pollux Hernúñez

(http://europa.eu.int/eurodicautom/contact.jsp) has stated, during a

translators conference organized by the university in Las Palmas, that as

of March 1, 2003, Eurodicautom will be closing down its website to the

public, due to the exessive demand (over 200,000 hits a day on a server

that can only handle 160,000).

He adds that the date may be extended until they finish consolidating all

the databases they have (Euterpe, Tis, etc.), at which point it will

become available only via *intranet* and only to [official] European

Union translators.

He also adds that if any political or other influential voices speak out,

and remind them that the service is being paid for by all Europeans and

has become nearly indispensible for translators, students, etc., that it

could remain public.

The translator (Ovidio Cordero - http://www.ocordero.com) has asked that

we spread the word.

Incroyable ! Dec 17, 2002

So, they are going to close it because the service has too much success. I suppose they are going to maintain all the european databases of legal documents that don\'t meet an \"excessive demand\" and then are not so useful...

I have also received the same \"threatening\" message through a DejaVu newsgroup. I have already signed the International Federation of Translators petition. Is there any way we can E-mail all Proz members their message, so that we all are aware Eurodicautom access my end by March? We should gather as many signatures as we can!

Thanks to all of you!
