Dear colleagues,

I plan to buy a monolingual English dictionary and I wonder which one fits the best a translator's needs: Oxford, Cambridge or any other?

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

I wish you a good day.

Kindest regards,

Catherine

Monolingual dictionaries on-line May 2, 2007

Dear Catherine,

do not forget, that Oxford and Cambridge are available online, too. I use Oxford with a university license but - as far as I know - Cambridge is free, try it:

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/

If you like online dictionaries, there are several other monolingual English sources, too. I often use the following sites (always with some criticism, of course):

http://szotar.sztaki.hu/webster/
http://www.allwords.com/
http://www.answers.com/

Allwords.com and answers.com provide multiple search in different online dictionaries.

Cheers,
Laci

Here is the OneLook index to many dictionaries, of which more than ten are monolingual English dictionaries.

Of these, I find the Merriam-Webster particularly useful.

On Linux there is the tool KTranslator. A list of some of the dictionaries that can be used with it on the KTranslator site includes the following, all free:

Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)
The WordNet® 2.0 Database
The Jargon File 4.3.1
The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.44
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary
Merrian Webster 10th dictionary
Collins Cobuild English Dictionary
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English
Soule's Dictionary of English Synonyms
Oxford English Reference Dictionary

http://ktranslator.sourceforge.net/dictionaries.html

I don't know of a Windows application that will allow you to use the Dictd dictionaries if you download them, but the Magical Jellybean Dictionary should allow you to access them online if you are using Windows 9x/ME/2000/XP

http://magicaljellybean.com/dict.shtml

There are, I believe, Windows applications for StarDict and SDictionary.

For SDictionary see also JaLingo http://jalingo.sourceforge.net/

Hello Catherine, try this too - the hardback version's very good, not sure how comprehensive the online version is as I haven't needed to use it
