Thanks a lot, David, for your appreciation. The customized engine is not finished yet, but it takes quite a long time to do it and I need to still index a lot of excellent terminology sites and to write a FAQ. I'm pleased to see somebody find it useful. Thanks again.

Jean-Marie

another tip Aug 31, 2007

If you want to know what a word exactly means (not necessarily the translation), you can type "definition: XXX" in the search field, and chances are that you will find the definition of that word.

For the suggestions still coming

Hope this helps other people, as well.

And, Jean-Marie, sorry for not saying thanks to you earlier, but this has been one of THOSE August months... I confess, though, that David's tip helped me to have a better look at the site

Hope you'll share with us the upgrades and everything.

Hi Cristina,

Fine to see that David's tip was so helpful. As I said in my first message the first scope is to "reduce the noisy results".

I can give you an exemple. Some days ago I wanted to know the french translation of "call-down contracts".
I tried Translations2.com
http://www.translations2.com/results.html?cx=016366401723178772633:d21e-jabrmm&cof=FORID:11&q="call-down%20contracts"&sa=Search#812
where I found only one page of results but changing the "e" with "f" in the FAO's URLs I get immediately "contrats d'appel".
Instead, with Google
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=gmail&q="call-down%20contracts"
I get almost 20 pages of results but it's really difficult to identify where I can find the french terms in this bulk result.
That's what I mean with a terminological engine "significantly less noisy than Google".
And it's quite logical if you think that Google performs the search in billion of web sites vs. (actually) 3,420 for translations2.com.

By now, the best tip is to search the term you are looking for to be translated with a relevant word in the target language. For instance, with "Photoelectric Sensor" just add "électronique"
http://www.translations2.com/results.html?cx=016366401723178772633:d21e-jabrmm&cof=FORID:11&q="Photoelectric%20Sensor"%20"électronique"&sa=Search#903
and you'll find some texts with the translation inside.

Try it with Google : http://www.google.fr/search?q="Photoelectric%20Sensor"%20"électronique"&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_frIT207IT207
all the first results are coming from ... eBay!

For sure it's optimized for the english-french pair but try out with other languages, some translators tall me that it works fine also with main european languages.

Anyway, there is still a lot of work to for enhance the relevancy!

Jean-Marie

I tried it just now for "drag and drop" (just couldn't remember the standard translation for "drop") and it worked much better than google.pt:

Then, I checked on google.pt for "arrastar e largar" and was satisfied with the results

But I couldn't do what you did relating the FAO's URLs. I tried several of them and replaced the E by the F, but could never find the page. This could also be useful for other languages, isn't it? I could replace an E by a P (Portuguese) and see what happened, for instance.

Merci et bon travail

The FAO site is mainly FR-EN and sometimes ES.

For instance with EUR-lex you can do it, just changing the PT with the two letters code of the target language (EN, FR, IT, DE, ES, etc.)
