Trados Dec 18, 2001

I bought Trados almost one year ago and I am extremely happy. My productivity is much higher (I do many manuals and repetitive texts) and in the evening I am not as tired as I used to be. I cannot even remember how I managed to work before Trados! I use a lot S-Tagger, a Trados tool which allows me to convert FrameMaker files in RTF and then back in FrameMaker. I used to hate that kind of files, but now they are extremely easy to handle. The only disadvantage is with Word documents with heavy la... See more

Trados does not handle them well, it can freeze and be very time-consumming.Collapse

For or against the translator...? Dec 18, 2001

Just my two cents\' worth...

If you\'re working on major projects, such as annual reports or issuing prospectuses, CAT tools are indispensible: there are changes in the original text until literally the last minute, plus there\'s no way to move the final deadline. Try doing it without a translation memory...

As far as I\'m concerned, I\'m very happy with Trados 5 (yes, including Workspace, although I tend to get started straight away rather than setting up a project...). True, it\'s not exactly the cheapest around, but that\'s reflected in functionality.

Instead of seeing these tools as a thread, I would advocate using them as USP\'s: on a major project I\'m currently involved in, the selling point was that, by using technology, I could offer the job to be done by two people (one specialised translator, one editor) rather than see it auctioned off to the type of agency we\'re all not too impressed with.

Wish to express my best thanks to all of you who answered so kindly to my query.

It helped me a lot and will continue to do so as I am a rookie in this businessfield (CAT tools) and it is always awfully difficult to make a choice (at it seems obvious that - to meet the interest of some translations\'agencies - you are supposed to use some CAT).

I disagree with such policy (for time being...) but it is well known that it is \"better to be wrong with the market than

I disagree with such policy (for time being...) but it is well known that it is \"better to be wrong with the market than to be right against it\" (stock broker proverb).

Best regards to all

Hi, Ralf Dec 18, 2001

Yes, I agree with you: I do a lot of financial reports, and there are always tons of last-minute changes. That\'s why I use either Déjà Vu or SDLX for these texts. Both of these are better than Trados (by far!!!!).

I agree with the use of CAT software for one\'s own personal benefit (speed, consistent terminology, changes, etc.) as long as we don\'t allow ourselves to be exploited by some reckless agencies.
