As part of a longer technical document I have to translate the standard texts explaining ISO drawing symbols for electrical and hydrolic plan drawings.

These are standardised and incorporated in CAD tools for instance. They are tought at technical colleges. They can be bought in specialised text books .. but are they not publicly available somewhere on the net.

As a matter of ISO policy, International Standards are available only in exchange for financial reward ('profit', if you prefer...). There have been attempts to publish some on the web (including on wikipedia), but they have been systematically removed for infringing copyright. The same applies, in principle, to publications from CENELEC, the IEC, the ITU and many other such bodies.

I suggest you first look here: http://www.ds.dk/ to see if the ISO text has been translated and transposed as a Danish National Standard by Dansk Standard. If so, they will no doubt be happy to sell you a copy ...

Thank you for your reply, and for taking the trouble to look up the Danish possibilities. I have of course already pursued all avenues I could possibly think of, and chose this posting as the last resort.

As a matter of general interest it seems that I have to conclude, that there is no free availability of the ISO terms, used in all standardisation.

Is that so ?

That is indeed my understanding - and my experience in the past 30 or more years of working with standards documents from the organizations I mentioned earlier (and several others, too). Standards documents in general - and terminology standards are no exception to the rule - are expensive, are protected by copyright and are not (supposed to be) available on the web or elsewhere 'for free'.

That said, I can't see any particular reason why these publications should be free of charge, anyway. After all, they cost a lot to compile and publish and the only way the organizations have of recovering part of those costs is by selling those products in the sure knowledge that businesses such as your client have a pressing need (if not a legal requirement) to obtain them - and they have a monopoly over the market...

Isn't that so?

BS standards are the same: I was quoted £72 (about 95 Euro) for the ones I wanted. Pricey indeed, so I didn't bother. I got them somewhere else.... ... See more
