Catriona - what's the difference between the IoL and the ITI? I mean apart from the fact that the IoL seems to be easier to join? At least that's what I gather from reading another thread on here.
Well, to be quite honest, I simply wanted to strengthen my UK connections having lived abroad for a very long time. A colleague is an IoL member and their offices are located very close to my London bolthole.
DO I NOT HAVE enough credibility by holding two law degrees? In my opinion acquiring those is more demanding than a degree in translations, no offence.
No offence taken. Of course, two law degrees lend a high degree of credibility as regards understanding the legal system in both countries. I do not hold a law degree in any country and I can feely admit that my understanding of the law has been acquired through many years of reading, understanding and translating legal documents. But I did make sure I obtained specific qualifications as a legal translator in Germany when I embarked on a career change, since they always are an issue in this country and also eased the way for BDÜ membership. It is probably worth enquiring whether you will be admitted on the basis of your substantial experience in the field.
Incidentally, I don't think any translation career is a shoo-in thesedays. The agencies love good qualifications and substantial experience and native speakers - until they learn of your rates. And the market for direct clients quite simply takes a while to build up.
All the best,
Catriona
