How do I become a certified translator online?

Hello all,

I am a Lebanese freelance translator. I am currently living in Lebanon, but I was born and raised abroad (France, USA, Saudi Arabia). I generally translate from/into English and French, but I also translate from/into Arabic.

I have diplomas in English, Management, Entrepreneurship and New Technologies, but I don't have a diploma in translation. Unfortunately, in order to become a certified translator in Lebanon, I need to have a translation degree.

So I'm wondering if there's any way I could become a certified translator online, or get some kind of accreditation that would be valid in clients' eyes. Any ideas?

Alain

It's not about clients' eyes Nov 1, 2010

A certified translator is someone recognized by a government as having the qualifications/competence required to translate documents in a foreign language in a way that they will be accepted by that government and its agencies.

Each country has - or doesn't have - laws on the matter. Where there is such a law, like in Brazil, Spain, Argentina etc., translators must comply and usually pass an exam. Where there is no law on the matter, (e.g. USA, Canada, UK, etc.) each agency is free to set their requirements for accepting such documents translated.

Brazilian laws, for instance, require candidates to have Brazilian nationality and be resident in Brazil for at least one year before enrolling for the exam. Spanish laws are not so strict, they only require citizenship of an EC country, and residence can be anywhere.

Maybe ATA certification would work for you.
