Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my laptop computer with Windows 98 SE installed. All of a sudden during the boot procedure I got a message concerning a missing .dll, and at the end I only have an empty blu screen. If I click CTRL+ALT+DEL I do not have any application running.

I also tried to start in Safety Mode but the result is the same: no icons, empty desktop.

Unfortunately I haven't created an emergency disk!!!

Note that I do not think it's a virus or a trojan since I rarely connect this computer to the Internet and plus a have NAV and a firewall.

I had in mind to install Windows again without deleting the applications installed.

I know it's possible but do you have any idea how to proceed?

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

New install of Win 98 should solve the problem Feb 6, 2004

Win 98 does not remove the old system as XP does, so your data will not be lost. However, you will have also to install all aplications once again.
Good luck!
Andrzej

There is NOTHING there? (no option to restore active desktop?)

Maybe Boot in DOS and run a chkdsk, if you´re lucky it´s just a lost cluster...

Maybe wait 15 minutes for the machine to come to it´s sences, then reboot and pray.

I've already tried the chkdsk but with no results.

I'll look at the Microsoft Support pages to find a solution.

I have a backup copy of my data, but I want to avoid installing and configuraing again all my applications.

Thanks

Problem solved Feb 7, 2004

Hello,

I was finally able to solve the problem, installing the operating system over the top of itself. All my applications are there and there was no need to reinstall them!!

FYI, Windows can be reinstalled using the bootable CD, or in case someone doesn't have a CD (like in my case) running the following command at the dos prompt:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\setup.exe

I found this info on the Internet and I think they're very useful.

Thanks everyone for their help.
