Hello all,
I have a really strange problem. I'm translating a text from Russian
to English. The text contains quotations from Greek as well, though
I'm leaving them untranslated.

To view the Greek quotations in Word, and some of the Cyrillic, I had
to install 2 additional fonts: Academy and Hellenica. As I'm working
in Wordfast periodically sections of text will be "skipped" over.
They appear to be the Cyrillic text that is written in Academy.

The Greek text in Hellenica so far appears to be fine.

I tried converting the Academy font into something like Times Roman
in the hope that would make it recognizable to Wordfast but it then
becomes unreadable.

For example: çàÿâèë “Ãäå áóäó ß, òóäà âû íå ñìîæåòå ïðèäòè”, “ïðè ñåì Èóäåè ãîâîðèëè ìåæäó ñîáîþ:... Íå õî÷åò ëè Îí èäòè â Åëëèíñêîå ðàññåÿíèå è ó÷èòü Åëëèíîâ?” (Èîàíí, 7.34-35).

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

My version of Wordfast is 5.53q.

I tried posting on the Wordfast Yahoo forums but there were no answers.

Thanks! Deborah

"skipped"? Nov 21, 2008

Do you mean WF "jumps" over some parts of the text, i.e., does not segment them?

yes... Nov 21, 2008

Yes, sorry for not being clear. When I press Alt-Down to get the next sentence, the text in this particular font will not appear in a box to be translated, but the text after it will come up instead. I almost didn't notice until I glanced back at previously translated text. I would have figured it out after cleanup I suppose when there was Russian remaining in the draft.

I'm wondering if it's related to Unicode vs. non-Unicode fonts.

Sometimes it happens... Nov 21, 2008

Sometimes WF would just skip a piece of text, and I've never been able to figure out the reason. Maybe it's fonts in your case, but I didn't see any pattern.
The only way around I could think of is this:
1) copy the "stubborn" sentence to another file
2) copy a translated segment and paste it place fo the "stubborn" sentence
3) open it for translation, put the right sentence back into the source box and enter the translation into the translation box.
Of course, it

Of course, it is feasible only if you have just one or two such sentences in the file.

Thank you so much for responding.

I was able to solve the problem (sort of) by running the non-Unicode font (Academy) through a Cyrillic converter into a Unicode font. However it is absolutely painful not to mention time-consuming to go through the document and identify these pieces - in some cases less than a sentence is affected. I can't do it by paragraphs or globally because it destroys the Greek text, as well as the footnotes.

Honestly sometimes these tools are more trouble than they're worth, especially with non-Latin characters.

Searching for fonts in Word is easy Dec 2, 2008

Hi Deborah,

You can search for fonts in Word: press Ctrl+F, make sure that the Search for field is completely empty, press the Format button, choose Character and then select the font you're looking for (I think Academy in your case). When executing the search you will be taken to all those text pieces in question.

Or have I misunderstood your problem?
