| User | Thread poster: Heinrich Pesch How can I translate Word index markers in WFP? |

In Word they look like this: {xe "Control function"}
In the WFP editor they look like this: {ut2}xe "Control functions"
But if I translate the visible words the original index marker is still visible after saving the translated file, followed by the translation which is outside of the marker.
So is there any way to translate these than do it in Word before or after the translation?

Dear Heinrich,
I am not sure why those are imported like this into WFP.
However, what I know is that for both indexes and TOC, you should NOT translate their text. You should only translate material itself. After you Save Translated File, open the target document in MS Word, right-click the Index or TOC and select "Update Fields"; select to update everything if you are asked.

Dear Yasmin,
This does not make sense. Of course the index itself must not be translated, but naturally someone must translate the words in the markers. Otherwise the index will stay in the source language after updating the index in Word.
The logic of the WFP method seams to be that the translator can translate the text after the marker and after saving the translated file copy those translations into the marker field. I have done that and it works. But it is not very elegant.

I think Yasmin is wrong this time, TOCs and Indexes are different even within Word, a table of content is created looking at the text that you have formatted as some type of heading as opposed to body text, because of that Word does not create an additional field within Word when you create a TOC it looks at the formatting of the text.
However when you create an index it creates an extra field which is not in fact linked to the text you initially chose it is merely tied to the text inside the field that has been created.
This is easily checked, create a TOC and create an index, if you change the original text for the TOC and update your TOC you will get the changes, with an index if you change the word outside the field and don't change the word inside the field if you update the Index you won't see any change.
I'm sorry to say I don't think you can do this with WFP, you will have to rebuild the file and translate the terms individually within Word.
Yasmin: This may be something the programmers can look into for future releases. | | | | | | |

Dear Heinrich and Alex,
Could you please send me an example file; I will test it here, and if there is an issue, I will report it.
Many thanks in advance!

Dear Heinrich,
Many thanks for the sample file you have sent me. I have investigated the issue and could replicate it; now I see what you mean. So, I have reported it to WFP Development Team for further investigation and fixing.
Thanks again,
