Hi everyone,
I just bought a new computer as an extra computer and installed basically all the same stuff as I have on the old one, windows XP office 2003 plus Wordfast (now 5.92m). Really it should be faster, and it does seem to be faster in every other respect, but when I use Wordfast it works much more slowly than with my old computer when it comes to moving to the next segment and entering something in the glossary. This is slowing me down a lot. It's wordfast classic and the texts are pretty normal and quite short. I thought maybe it could have something to do with the fact that I'm using a TM from an older version of wordfast - could that be it? In my old computer it's a slightly different version - the icons are different, but it's still version 5 I think. But surely all these versions should be absolutely compatible anyway, shouldn't they?
I have tried normal view of course - it makes no difference. This is a brand new computer and I have everything set up the same so it should be faster rather than slower.
Can anyone help me? I love to work with Wordfast, this is terrible.

Do you really use Windows XP on a new computer? Is it patched?
We are in 2012 now, and since last year XP is not maintained anymore.

yes I do

I tried windows 7 but I prefer XP, because I know where everything is and changing systems just slows me down. I like word 2003 too and the last thing I want is to get a new version where everything is in a different place. It isn't being maintained? Well, I didn't know that. It should be I think. Anyway, everything seems to be working just fine.

Change memory setting
Jan 20
Have you checked your memory setting in WFP?
Go to Edit > Preferences > Memory preferences
You will probably have 256 MB selected.
Choose the most memory you can.
Please note I have always had problems when choosing 1470 MB, it makes WFP freeze and I have to go into the Wordfast.ini file and change it back to the previous value or WFP won't work, so I would recommend choosing 1024MB but other people don't have problems when choosing 1470 MB so you might get lucky.
If you do choose 1470 MB and WFP stops working all you have to do is open the Wordfast.ini file and change the setting back to the value that worked (I would recommend locating Wordfast.ini before making the changes and looking at the file so you know what you have to change in case you have problems).
Changing OS might slow you down initially but you will soon learn where everything is, XP is a a very good OS, but 7 is better and worth the change. All OSs are finaly deprecated, in the case of XP Microsoft will stop offering all support on April 8, 2014 (so you still have a while to go).

what does WFP mean?
Jan 20
Sorry I'm not familiar with that abbreviation. If you mean Wordfast Pro then please note I am using Wordfast Classic here.
I tried windows 7 and didn't like the way it groups my google chrome windows under a single button and doesn't allow to switch ti the old way where I can open a fresh window with one click instead of two. I like to pick up speed, so this is highly inconvenient. Developers need to stop inventing annoying functions that you can't switch off - another example is Google Instant.

Since you posted your question twice, I'll also post my answer twice:
Not directly related to your question, but I'm wondering why you installed Win XP on a new computer. While XP was relatively good (for an MS product) in its own time, especially after SP3, Win 7 is much better IMO. Modern hardware is optimized for Win7, not XP. So if I were you, I would run the OS for which your new computer was designed.
I won't suggest you upgrade Word 2003, however, as it's what I'm using myself for production I do have a copy of Office 2010, which I use for testing, support and file conversion purposes.
On a modern computer with Win 7 and plenty of RAM, Wordfast (any version) should fly. It's definitely the case on mine, and I've a relatively modest (by today's standard) CPU & video adapter.
Have you migrated an old .ini? If so, you may want to scrap it and let Wf generate a fresh one. Sometimes, .ini's carry a lot of dead weight...
I don't think so, but it's easy enough to check it. Here is what the startup folder of my Word 2010 setup looks like:
As you can see, I have a collection of various builds. I can easily switch from one build to another, by copying one of the wordfast.dot.xxx on top of wordfast.dot
There's definitely something wrong with your setup. Btw, did you install Office from scratch, or via some migrating utility?

problem related to slow saving
Jan 20
I noticed later that documents are saving very slowly in word 2003, both documents from my old computer and new ones, and I think whatever is causing this is what is causing Wordfast to slow down.
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? This is a brand new computer with a freshly installed windows XP and Word 2003, everything else is working fine so this shouldn't be happening.
Would it help if I downloaded a service pack or something? Or would it help if I switched to windows 7 do you think?

Problem solved
Jan 20
I found out what the problem was, I opened the TM from my memory stick - all I had to do was save it onto the hard drive and open TM and glossary from and now Wordfast works like it should, of course. Sorry for wasting your time that was pretty obvious.
