I am thinking of switching to Mac and I am new to Wordfast. Some of the regulars of this forum have already heard from me... but I am still flooded with doubts. Are there happy users running Wordfast on Mac's latest OS and Office X? What about Virtual PC? I have spent the last weeks searching the Net for answers. But I am torn. Are there happy users running Wordfast on Mac's latest OS and Office X? What about Virtual PC? I have spent the last weeks searching the Net for answers. But I am torn. I would really like to try Mac, but I have read reviews that Wordfast is slower, that Virtual PC (to use Trados, for instance), is slow, etc. Then again, many of the articles out there are old (i.e., they refer to older versions of the software and OS). So I'd like to hear the opinion from those who are using the latest Mac OS and the latest Wordfast versions, which is what I would get now, of course. Thank-you very much to you all! diana ▲ Collapse

Hi there! The best way to get answers about Wordfast is to join one or more Wordfast groups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Wordfast/ Now, about the latest Mac OS X, it's fine, especially for someone just switching over: you won't go through the pain of parting with your favorite OS 9 features as most of us had to. Thank-you Esther. I have joined the Wordfast list. And I have emailed Yves Champollion and he claims that he has tested Wordfast 4.30 in Word X and OSX. However I keep reading that some people can\'t run it, or that it\'s slow, etc. I really want to give it a try and switch to Mac, but I don\'t want to spend a lot of money and regret it... Thanks! Diana Hi Diana -- I have a G4 with Mac OS X (Panther) but not Word X, so I can't tell you that I have run it myself. However, having installed Wordfast on my previous Mac running System 9, I know the installation is not as straightforward as with a PC. But it's not that complicated either. There is basically no reason why Wordfast couldn't work with OS X and Word X since it's just a set of macros. One reason it's usually slower on a Mac is that you get less speed with a Mac than with a PC for the same money. I work on my PC for that reason. but I keep buying Macs for a number of applications, the most important for me being safe transactions on the Net. Best, Esther

So you are telling me that you don't really work on your Mac? I barely use my PC for anything else than translating and I definitely need a powerful computer. Honestly, if I can't do what I do now in my PC, why should I even consider switching to Mac? I know about security and all that, but I can work around that. I don't know if I want to trade having security problems and an OS that crashes every now and again for a realiable Mac that is slower and won't be suitable for a translator. I wish I could try it for myself before taking a decision! Thank you for your help!! Diana ▲ Collapse

If you ever want to get Trados or SDLX, you'll need a PC. Trados doesn't work with Virtual PC, you need a Pentium processor (I don't know about SDLX, but I suspect it's the same). I don't trust Windows a bit for security, that's why I have a Mac: for shopping and banking. I don't know what kind of system you have, but my Windows XP on a P4 doesn't crash. Maybe all you need is a new system. Best, Esther

Hello to you all, And thank you for your answers. Regarding the question "why do I want to change to Mac", here is my story: I work with a laptop because I am not quite settled and I currently have an extremely noisy Compaq Presario (I know all computers have a certain noise to them, but I can tell you that everyone that checks mine out wonders when is it going to take off. It's that bad.) So I am in the process of buying a new computer and I had never thought of Mac be... See more Hello to you all, And thank you for your answers. It's that bad.) So I am in the process of buying a new computer and I had never thought of Mac because I feared that the incompatibilites were still an issue. Then I started researching and to my surprise, there are many translators that use Mac. When I asked questions and read messages in all sorts of forums and mailing lists, I became more and more confused. Some of those translators that had a Mac, also had a PC, which is not an option for me right now, since I don't want to carry two laptops with me. I was just looking for people like Emmanuelle (thank you again!), who is a 100% Mac user and uses Wordfast, for more information on their experience. And like her, there are other 100% Mac users that run Trados under Virtual PC. As you will understand too, I know that I won't have problems with a PC but I don't have any experience with Mac and translation software and since the messages I get are contradictory I can't take the risk of buying a Powerbook and then be unable to do what I do now. I could only blame myself for that and jump out of the window! I am now considering borrowing/hiring a Powerbook to see it in action. I am afraid that would be the only choice. Again, thank you all for your answers diana ▲ Collapse
Andrea Re United Kingdom Local time: 09:44 English to Italian + ... Wordfast still slow | Jun 6, 2009 |
Hi there, I thought of posting here, rather than opening a new thread. Hope it is the relevant bit I have my new mac and currently use Office 2004, however I have noticed that Wordfast (5.0) is much slower even compared to my elderly laptop I am wanting to retire. Any suggestions as what to do about it? Thanks, Andrea
