If this should be on a different forum, or these is a FAQ I should refer to, please let me know.

Wordfast claims to be compatible with TRADOS. Is it really possible to comply with a job that lists TRADOS as a requirement using Wordfast alone?

Yes, Can Mar 16, 2005

Trados does accept Wordfast-translated files and WordFast accepts Trados-translated files.

You can also exchange translation memories between both applications.

Cheers

Bruno

It depends and I think you won't find any unjust claim at www.wordfast.net.

You'll find useful explanations at http://www.your-translations.com/cat-wordfast_and_trados.htm.

Wordfast doesn't support Tag Editor files, so anything TTX is for true CAT jugglers only. Wordfast used to open any Trados TM and could even produce Trados TMs. This is no longer the case. Yves Champollion has abandoned all stealth compatibility programming but his current white hat approach leaves us with sufficient means to work for Trados-only clients.

Wordfast does support Trados-segmented and Trados-tagged files without a problem. By default it segments files the way Trados segments them by default. This means you can receive and/or deliver Trados-segmented and Trados-tagged text documents. That's good enough for most clients. They'll clean up your bilingual document in their Trados TM without ever thinking about Wordfast.

Wordfast creates TMX TMs for use in any other serious CAT tool but Wordfast TMs don't contain any formatting information like Trados TMs.

So Wordfast offers true compatibility on document level, most translation agencies understand by now, but you can't use a Wordfast TMX TM to retranslate a document in Trados without having to check the formatting.

Kind regards,
Gerard

To you Can for having brought the subject. I was wondering too if working with Wordfast you could comply with a job where Trados is required.

Thanks to Gerard for the detailed explanation.

Whether they are compatible or not, be sure to tell your client beforehand that you're going to use Wordfast for his Trados job.
