Wordfast+Excel: halfway in document but Wf stopped

I'm in the middle of translating a large Excel file (one sheet, lots of cells including hyperlinks), and use Wordfast for the numerous repetitions. I'm not even halfway (cell 408 from 1602 in total) and suddenly Wordfast cries out "the end of the Excel document has been reached", "processing: 100% done" and that's it. What should I do next?

All ideas, solutions, tips and moral support are welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Bianca

try copying the contents to a Word document Mar 6, 2006

I have must admit I haven't used WF with Excel docments, because in the work I've had to do so far it's been easier to copy the worksheet contents to a Word document (where they will appear as a table), do the WF bit there, and then copy them back to a Excel document.

There are a couple of potential problems with that:

1. If you have a highly formatted Excel worksheet, you may have to copy the translation back a bit at a time.

2. If text is formatted with line feeds in the Excel cells, they will be converted to paragraph marks in Word, but paragraph marks in Word won't copy back into Excel as line feeds (they simply disappear). That means you have to reinsert the line feeds (and the only way I know to do that is to copy and paste an existing one from Excel).

BTW, if you use WF to translate a PPT file directly, it will (falsely) detect the end of the document at the end of the current slide if you allow it to translate until fuzzy. Maybe something similar is happening in your case.

Hi Kenneth, thanks for your suggestions. I've never had to copy Excel stuff in Word other than for counting words
Could it be that the inserted links are blocking Wordfast? The cells involved contain text that is all one big link...

problem with links? Mar 6, 2006

dunno... in my experience, WF doesn't have problems with external links in Word docs, so in the first instance I wouldn't expect it to have problems with links in Excel (but that's only a guess).

It might help to select the worksheet cell (or row) after the one where WF stops and try to continue with WF translation from that point (and fill in the gap manually if necessary).

bingo! (bad news) Mar 6, 2006

Well, I just tried a test: I created a test Word document with a bit of text marked as a bookmark, and then created a second Word document and placed a hyperlink to the bookmarked text of the first document in the second document.
Next, I copied the hyperlink text from the second document to a cell of a new Excel worksheet, after first filling several other cells with 'normal' text, and added normal text in a few cells after it.
Then I tried translating the Excel worksheet with WF (using a blank Word document).
Result: WF spent a good while digesting the hyperlink text and then declared that it had reached the end of the Excel document

Conclusion (for now): at least if the Excel cell contains only a hyperlink, WF will see it as the end of the document (sounds like a programming error).

But it should be possible to continue by selecting the next cell and restarting WF.

Good luck!

Wow, all those efforts just for me! Thanks! I don't know if copy/pasting the cell info+hyperlink in Word and replace all links afterwards means more work than simply copy/paste the Excel sheet in Word right from the start and turn it into a sheet again after the translation, but it sure is a means to get going again with this project! Thanks for all your help and info!

Warm regards,

Bianca

Line feed in Excel Mar 7, 2006

To insert a line feed inside a cell in Excel you simply press ALT+RETURN. It will move you to the next line INSIDE the current cell.

Also watch out for formulae with text Mar 7, 2006

Sometimes clients put formulae in the cells, in which text is present. In normal view, the text shows, but if you click on the cell itself, you'll notice that it is a formula or a piece of linked text. Wordfast ignores numbers, and it therefore also ignores formulae. I wonder what will happen if you select "Segment All" in PB...?
