El objetivo del estudio es analizar el perfil de expresión génica del carcinoma de próstata hormono refractario en relación con la respuesta al tratamiento adyuvante con docetaxel. Además, se pretende comparar niveles de expresión génica entre muestras
tumorales de dichos pacientes con y sin respuesta a quimioterapia (QT) adyuvante con docetaxel, y de esta forma seleccionar genes diferencialmente expresados entre ambos grupos para establecer un panel de genes predictivos de respuesta a quimioterapia.
El proyecto consistirá en un estudio prospectivo de pacientes afectos de carcinoma de próstata hormona refractario y candidatos a QT adyuvante en el Servicio de Urología y Oncologia de nuestro centro. Se extraerá RNA de todas las muestras tumorales y se analizará el perfil genético de los tumores mediante técnicas de microarrays de DNA y PCR cuantitativa a tiempo real (qRT-PCR) en función de la respuesta a QT. En una primera fase del proyecto se determinará mediante microarrays de Affymetrix los genes implicados en la respuesta a la QT. comparando 20 biopsias de próstata de pacientes que han respondido con 20 biopsias de próstata de pacientes que no han respondido. Del análisis comparativo de ambos grupos se pretende obtener una primera lista de genes diferencialmente expresados entre respondedores y no respondedores. Esta selección de genes serán estudiados mediante qRT-PCR, utilizando TaqMan Low Density Arrays (TLDA, Applied Biosystems) en una serie más amplia de muestras (n=50).

The purpose of the study is to analyze the gene expression profile of hormone refractory prostate cancer in relation to the response to adjuvant treatment with docetaxel. The intent is also to compare gene expression levels between tumor samples of these patients with and without response to adjuvant chemotherapy (QT) with docetaxel, and in this way select genes differentially expressed between both groups in order to establish a panel of chemotherapy-response predictive genes.
The project will consist of a prospective study of patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer and adjuvant QT candidates in the Urology and Oncology Service of our center. RNA will be extracted from all the tumour samples and the gene profile of the tumors will be analyzed using DNA microarray techniques and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) in relation to the QT response. In a first phase of the project, the genes involved in the QT response will be determined by Affymetrix microarrays, comparing 20 prostate biopsies from patients who have responded with 20 prostate biopsies from patients who have not responded. From the comparative analysis of both groups we expect to get a first list of genes expressed differentially between responders and non-responders. This selection of genes will be studied via qRT-PCR, using TaqMan Low Density Arrays (TLDA, Applied Biosystems) in a broader series of samples (n=50).
Lastly, the predictive chemotherapy response capability of these genes in prostate cancer will be assessed.

Although the classic definition of recession is two consecutive quarters of declines in the gross domestic product, Mr. Stanley pointed out that the National Bureau of Economic Research, the nonpartisan organization that is the official arbiter of when recessions begin and end, doesn't necessarily follow that definition. "If you go back to the 2001 recession, there was only one negative GDP quarter, and there might not even be one negative quarter in this recession," he said.
The economists also expressed growing concerns that a 2008 recession could be worse than both the 2001 and 1990-91 downturns. They put the odds of a deeper downturn at an average 48%, up from 39% in the previous survey. Mark Nielson of MacroEcon Global Advisors said that "we recognize the previous two recessions were mild and, if a recession does occur, it is likely to be slightly worse than the previous two."
Amid the concerns about the economy, respondents expect more action from the government and the Federal Reserve. Some 63% said the use of public money to deal with the housing crisis is now likely or certain, while on average they expect the Fed to lower its benchmark federal-funds rate to 2% by June from the current 3%.

La metodología que utilizamos para efectuar la resistividad eléctrica en la Planta de Proquina, asociado al problema de contaminación, es mediante la utilización de Sondeos Eléctricos Verticales (SVEs, por sus siglas en español) utilizando el arreglo electródico Schlumberger.

En esta configuración se colocan cuatro electrodos posicionados a lo largo de una línea recta. En la parte exterior (en los extremos) de la línea son colocados los electrodos de corriente; y en la parte interna se colocan los electrodos de potencial (recepción de la señal).

The methodology we use to effect the electrical resistivity in the Proquina Plant, associated with the problem of contamination, is through the use of Vertical Electrical Soundings (VESs) employing the Schlumberger electrode array.
Schlumberger Array
In this array four electrodes are positioned along a straight line. The current electrodes are placed on the outside (at the ends) of the line; while the potential electrodes (signal reception) are placed on the inside.
In order to vary the depth of exploration for the measurements, the current electrodes are moved to outside the array, while the internal or potential electrodes are kept in the same position, until the difference in potential is too small to produce reliable readings. As soon as that happens, the potential electrodes are moved outside.
Firstly a center point is marked out for the sounding, where it shall be located. From this point, different points opening up to the right and left of the line are marked out, such as, for example: 2, 3, 4, 6,.............up to a distance that has been calculated to penetrate to the depth being researched. The distance between the current electrodes is designated as AB, and the distance between the potential electrodes is designated as MN. Now then, we designate the distance between the center point and any of the two current electrodes as AB/2. So that, if we want to research a depth of 50 m., it is necessary to place the current electrodes at a distance of 100 m. from the center point, in other words AB/2=100 m.

Why Elect Subchapter S status? The primary perceived benefit is one layer of tax. A corporation like IBM is taxed under "Subchapter C" of the Internal Revenue Code. IBM pays taxes on its net profits and then the IBM stockholders pay taxes when the profits are paid out to them. In contrast, in a Subchapter S corporation the corporation's net profit or net loss is deemed distributed to the stockholders, who have to include it on their individual tax returns whether or not they actually receive cash.
It used to be a relative no brainer to elect S if you qualified. The highest corporate rates were higher than highest individual rates. So if the corporation elected Subchapter S status the overall situation resulted in less current tax. After the tax changes in the early Clinton years, the highest individual rates (in the 40% range) are now higher than highest corporate rates (generally 35%) and as a result the venture (corporation and stockholders combined) may actually pay more currently if the venture is profitable and elects S status. Now you have to look at the venture's likely exit strategy. If the company can be sold through an asset sale in a few years then with a cash flow model you can determine the net present value of paying incrementally higher taxes currently in order to pay only one layer of tax on "big hit" sale at end, assuming the tax rules don't change in the interim.
