The indoor ski lodge, known as SnowFunPark, that opened in December 2006 in Wittenburg (north-eastern Germany) is just one example of the form leisure and theme parks are taking nowadays. Skiing as well as other sporting and leisure activities are freed from their normal, familiar surroundings and are both reinvented and meticulously reproduced in a new location. In her book, “Grüne Hölle oder schillerndes Paradies?” [Hellish Jungle or Colourful Paradise?] on the cultural significance of theme parks in Germany, Sandra Scherreiks describes how the contemporary press oscillates between harsh criticism of and fascination with these spectacular, multi-million Euro projects. Theme parks have attracted particular criticism for destroying ‘natural’ and ‘unspoilt’ environments. Twelve selected buildings forcefully demonstrate just how complex German architecture has become, how varied are the styles current in Germany and how one factor still dominates: quality. In Central Europe new buildings are less significant than extension and conversion projects. Very often these involve conversion of disused industrial complexes, military barracks and railway grounds. The issue here is how to retain Europe’s architectural heritage and develop attractive and elegant districts in the European city – using sustainable and energy-saving architecture. An good example is the city of Ulm, where modern yet appropriate architecture has been built in the shadow of the Gothic cathedral. Or Celle, where an old art museum has been extended by means of a glass-and-light structure that changes colour at night like a chameleon. Old cities are being developed with structures that are bold yet respect tradition. |
