В 1997 г. Национальная библиотека Венгрии (Библиотека им. Сечени) предcтавила Постоянному комитету секции РАС (Сохранность и консервация) Международной федерации библиотечных ассоциаций созданный "Терминологический словарь по консервации документов на пяти языках" - английском, венгерском, итальянском, немецком, французском,. На заседании Комитета было решено, что три российские библиотеки - ВГБИЛ, РГБ и РНБ - переведут словарь на русский язык. Каждая библиотека переводила свою часть словаря, затем следовали обмен переводами и взаимное корректирование. При переводе принимались во внимание немецкие и французские эквиваленты. Получился двуязычный англо-русский переводной словарь эквивалентов слов и выражений, использующихся в такой специфичной области, как консервация документов на бумаге, который и предложен вниманию специалистов.

Словарь содержит 1 000 словарных статей. Настоящее издание адресовано в первую очередь библиотечным работникам, что определяет его нетрадиционность. Помимо справочных статей в словарь включены индексы ББК по таблицам для научных библиотек (Вып. XXII) и по таблицам для областных библиотек (Вып. 4), что поможет существенно облегчить работу индексатора в библиотеках при обработке литературы по религиозной тематике. Справочник не претендует на исчерпывающее объяснение значения каждого термина.

Словарь содержит в себе около 3 тысяч терминов и понятий (2 797 словарных статей). Электронная версия словаря подготовлена на основе современных источников (текущая литература последних лет): энциклопедических словарей, справочников по педагогике, отдельных авторских трудов и статей. При его составлении были использованы прежде всего такие авторитетные издания как "Педагогический энциклопедический словарь" под редакцией Б. М. Бим-Бада, изданный в 2002 году, и "Словарь по образованию и педагогике" под редакцией В. М. Полонского, изданный в 2004 году. Эти издания составляют основную базу данного словаря. В словаре представлен перечень названий современных государственных и негосударственных высших учебных заведений, где осуществляется профессиональная подготовка по педагогическим специальностям, с указанием местонахождения, а также современных издательств, выпускающих учебную и детскую литературу. Здесь даны точные официальные названия крупнейших библиотек страны, а также список всех действительных членов Российской Академии Образования (РАО), членов-корреспондентов РАО и почетных членов РАО. Фамилии известных педагогов и деятелей образования даны в алфавитном порядке с указанием дат жизни, области деятельности в педагогической науке и названий известных трудов.
