Interpreter Bio

Place of Birth: Sarajevo, Bosnia/Europe
Mother tongue: Bosnian
Location: Chicago area and suburbs, Illinois/USA
Field of expertise: Health Care, Legal, Insurance.
Years of experience: 14

I am a Bosnian American, living in the United States (Chicago area, IL). I lived in Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Germany pursuing my career in Interpretation in Bosnian/English. I attended the most prestigious linguistic school in Bosnia ("Revolucionari i Narodni Heroji Prve Gimnazije"), completed 4 years with Diploma as a professional interpreter in Bosnian and English. Completed two years of Law School at University of Sarajevo. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice conferred by Loyola University Chicago in 2005.

I worked five years for the Department of Aviation (City of Chicago) with a successful history of interpretations in Bosnian for Government agencies such as U.S Immigration, U.S Customs and Police Department. I interpreted for detectives, investigators, federal judges and attorneys. Trials, depositions, insurance claims, and things like that. Then I continued with health care and interpreted for hospitals, psychologists and psychiatrists all over the country.

I am currently Self-Employed, working as an Independent Contractor ( a Federal Court Interpreter, Health Care/Medical Interpreter and Language Specialist ) providing interpretations throughout the United States, in person, as well as over the phone, for several different clients in US, Canada, UK and Australia. My passion for foreign languages led me to continue interpreting service internationally.

About the Fields of Expertise

My expertise is in legal and health care/medical fields. I have an educational background in both of these fields and it is much easier for me to interpret about the areas I already studied myself.

Many Bosnians are people who immigrated during the genocide and ethnic cleansing in 1992. They went through a lot of trauma. Some were raped, some were in concentration camps, some saw their family and children killed, some escaped persecution, some have no families here. Their experiences are still fresh, so they want someone sensitive who will speak to them in their own language. However it is not just the authenticity of the language they care about but also the tone of the voice and your credibility.

In order for them to open up and trust me they usually want to know who I am, so I do not mind sharing my background with them. I understand that they need to know that because they do not feel comfortable having an interpreter of different background who will be insensitive to their stories and experiences. Consequently, I am very successful in helping both the Client and Bosnian person. My favorite areas of interpretation are therapy and counseling sessions. My psychology background makes it so much easier for the client because I understand the terminology. That is one of the reasons why I get many repeat calls, where clients specifically ask for me.

When it comes to the legal field, my background in criminology helps me a lot because I understand court procedures and legal terminology. Interpreting in the legal field is more precise and must be very clear and accurate. It is not about repeating what somebody says but also making sure that the question asked is clearly understood. For this you need great communications skills.

Why do you do this job? What motivates you?

I do it because I am good at it, and because I love it. The huge desire to help people from Bosnia who need to overcome all kinds of obstacles, and to provide the top quality interpretation to my clients who want to help them is ultimately what motivates me. To me the point of this job is not just to interpret but also to resolve issues, to make a difference, to reduce the pain, to make somebody heard, to be someone's voice, to make it right, and to move on to another case and another case so that everybody is helped to the maximum with genuine care. There are too many people out there that need this help.
