Предметами, которые выбрасывает на берег океанский прибой, около десяти лет назад заинтересовался американский океанолог Курт Эббесмейер. Началось все с исключительно го случая, который наверняка привлек бы внимание не только специалиста по изучению океанов, но и любого купальщика. На одном из пляжей штата Вашингтон (северо-запад США) вдруг оказалось огромное количество кроссовок.
Вскоре Эббесмейер выяснил, что они были потеряны корейским грузовозом. В бурю с его палубы волна смыла (to wash away) 21 контейнер с кроссовками. В результате расследований Эббесмейер составил компьютерную программу, которая, исходя из места потери груза в океане и известной картины океанских течений, позволяет предсказывать, куда будет выброшено все упавшее "с воза". Sea Treasures
Some ten years ago, objects being washed up onto the ocean shore caught American oceanologist Curt Ebbesmeyer’s eye. This phenomenon began with a particular instance that most likely would turn not only an oceanologist’s head, but also any swimmer’s; an enormous quantity of sneakers ended up out of nowhere on a Washington State beach.
Ebbesmeyer found out soon afterwards that twenty-one containers filled with sneakers had been swept off a Korean freightliner’s deck during a storm. As a result of some investigative work, he was able to create a computer program that, based on the location of the accident and a well-known map of ocean currents, allows one to predict where lost cargo will surface.
Ebbesmeyer began to notify people of his findings in a quarterly bulletin. As a result, not only are scholars intrigued by the information that the he presented, but so are a number of government institutions that work to preserve the environment and clean up oil spills.
According to Ebbesmeyer, around a thousand freight containers are lost annually during storms at sea. Once these containers have been lost, some just sink straight to the bottom along with their freight. However, in many instances the ocean waves shatter the containers, thus sending their contents in separate directions. In 1992, a ship that was heading from the Congo to the United States lost thousands of plastic toy ducklings; some had washed up on a Washington State beach, while the rest, according to oceanologists, continued towards the North Pole; in a few years the ducklings could end up on the shores of Britain.
Ebbesmeyer used his computer program to predict the movement of 34,000 hockey gloves that had been lost by a cargo ship in 1994. Fifteen months later, the hockey gloves were washed on to the ocean shore in the North-Western United States, exactly where the computer had predicted. Later on, 2,756,950 toys headed towards Connecticut from the Netherlands had their routes accounted for. However, the toys did not make it all the way to Connecticut. The container with the toys inside had been swept off the ship’s deck during a storm off the British Isles. By 2020, they will be strewn across the Northern Hemisphere by the ocean’s currents.

CONSTRUCTION IN SEISMIC AREAS
1. ОСНОВНЫЕ ПОЛОЖЕНИЯ
1.1. Настоящие нормы должны соблюдаться при разработке проектной документации на строительство, реконструкцию, усиление и восстановление зданий и сооружений (далее зданий), возводимых или расположенных на площадках с сейсмичностью 7, 8, 9 и 10 баллов.
Примечания: 1. Требования настоящих норм не распространяются на проектирование транспортных и гидротехнических сооружений, а также на проектирование атомных станций.
2. Здания и отдельные элементы, проектируемые в соответствии с положениями настоящих норм, должны удовлетворять требованиям, предъявляемым к ним другими нормативными документами (если иное не оговорено в настоящем документе), действующими для обычных и особых условий строительства.
1.2. При выборе площадок под предполагаемое строительство не рекомендуется размещать жилые массивы, промышленные (производственные) комплексы или отдельные здания на площадках, неблагоприятных в сейсмическом отношении.
1.3. К неблагоприятным в сейсмическом отношении относятся площадки строительства:
а) имеющие сейсмичность 10 баллов;
б) расположенные в зонах возможного проявления тектонических разломов на дневной поверхности;
в) с крутизной склонов более 15 °, сложенные рыхлыми водо-насыщенными грунтами или породами с сильно нарушенной структурой; расположенные в непосредственной близости от плоскостей сбросов или в зонах возможного прохождения селевых потоков;
г) с просадочностью грунтов, плывунами, карстом, горными выработками.
1.4. На площадках, указанных в п. 1.3.а, строительство новых зданий может быть допущено с разрешения экспертной комиссии Комитета по жилищной и строительной политике.
На площадках, указанных в п. 1.3.б, строительство новых зданий, как правило1, не допускается. В исключительных случаях строительство зданий на этих площадках может быть допущено с разрешения экспертной комиссии Комитета по жилищной и строительной политике.
Строительство зданий на площадках, указанных в п. 1.3.в, без специальных мер по их защите от оползней селевых потоков, обвалов и осыпей не допускается.

Construction in Seismic Areas
1. Main Provisions
1.1. These norms should be followed when construction, reconstruction, reinforcing and restoring buildings and facilities in areas with seven, eight, nine or ten seismic points

2. The buildings and other separate elements that are designed according to these norms must satisfy the requirements laid out by other normative documents that effect both regular and special construction provisions.
1.2. It is not recommended to choose a seismic unfavorable construction site for residential buildings, industrial complexes or other separate buildings.
1.3. Seismic unfavorable construction sites include those that:
a) Have ten seismic points
b) Develop technical faults on the site’s ground surface
c) Are located a slop inclination of more than fifteen degrees and are built on loose, water-saturated soil or structurally unstable rock. Are located extremely close to a fault plain or a possible debris flow zone.
d) Have any sign of excavation soil settlement, shifting sand or sinkholes.
1.4. New building construction is allowed on sites indicated in point 1.3.6 with permission from an expert commission from the State Residential Housing and Construction Policy Committee.
