Als exportstärkstes Bundesland hatte NRW im Jahr 2006 mit rund 160 Milliarden Euro einen Anteil von rund 18 Prozent am deutschen Export. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr steigerte sich der Export um fast 11 Prozent. Als eigenständiger Staat würde NRW damit als Exportland weltweit an 19. Stelle stehen.
Mengenmäßig wichtigste Export-Güter sind Chemische Erzeugnisse, Maschinen, Kraftwagen und Kraftwagenteile sowie Eisen- und Stahlerzeugnisse. Darüber hinaus sind neuere Wirtschaftsbereiche wie die Medien- und Internetwirtschaft, die Life Sciences oder die Mikro- und Nanotechnologie auf Auslandsmärkten erfolgreich.
Das Land hat die Außenwirtschaftsförderung und das Standortmarketing für Nordrhein-Westfalen umgestellt, um sie effizient und wirtschaftsnah zu gestalten. Die Außenwirtschaftsgesellschaft NRW.International führt nun die operativen Aufgaben der Außenwirschaftsförderung durch. Die Gesellschaft wird zu je einem Drittel von der Vereinigung der Industrie- und Handelskammern (VIHK NRW), dem Westdeutschen Handwerkskammertag (WHKT) und der NRW.BANK getragen. Die Landesgesellschaft NRW.INVEST übernimmt das internationale Standortmarketing für Nordrhein-Westfalen und wirbt für die Ansiedlung neuer Unternehmen.

En qualité de Land allemand le plus fort en exportations, le NRW avait atteint en 2006, avec 160 milliards d'euros, un pourcentage de 18% sur les exportations allemandes totales. Par rapport à l'année précédente, les exportations ont augmenté de 11%. Prise singulièrement, cette région se trouve à la 19ème place dans la liste des pays exporteurs.
Les biens les plus exportés sont : produits chimiques, machines, automobiles et ses composants, ainsi que produits en fer et en acier. En plus, des nouveuax secteurs sont en train de devenir porteurs sur les marchés exterieures, tels que l' informatique, la science de la vie ou la nanotechnologie. Le gouvernement régional a mis en place des dispositifs d'aides et de commercialisation, afin de rendre le Land performant et économiquement forte. La société NRW -International est chargée des missions opérationnelles pour ce qui est des aides aux entreprises. Elle se compose de l'association des Chambres de commerce et d'industrie ( 1/3), du conseil des Chambres de l'artisanat de l'Allemagne de l'Ouest et de la Banque NRW. La sociéte NWR Invest est chargée de la commercialisation de la région en qualité de lieu d'implantation pour des nouvelles entreprises.
